Research analyst supports data related needs of internal and external constituencies and reporting requirements for federal, state, CSU and accrediting mandates through development and maintenance of necessary database, data submission, data analyses and research, and dissemination of data and results in the forms of reports, data visualization and presentation.

Major duties and responsibilities:
  • Plan, conduct, and/or oversee segments of broad gauge and complex administrative studies and projects under general supervision.
  • Develop working relations with internal and external personnel to coordinate projects with other studies and activities.
  • Discuss and report progress and problems encountered during the course of work due to changes in direction or focus with the supervisor.
  • Prepare reports, create data visualizations and dashboards, and develop recommendations for future plans or actions.
  • Conducting data analyses, forecasts, predictions, constructing and maintaining research databases, preparing manuals of instruction or procedures, making recommendations, and writing research results to support planning, enrollment management, policy formation, decision-making, and accreditation.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other departments on campus to ensure the timely completion and accuracy of routine reports and special projects.
  • Construct, test, implement, and evaluate internal surveys.
  • Provide information, assistance, and leadership to the campus and serve on committees and task forces.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university.

Four years of progressively responsible administrative, technical, or professional analytical experience in educational research, institutional research, data analysis, and/or operations research which demonstrates ability to conduct substantive surveys and studies of problems and issues in assigned areas.

The rank of Associate Professor or higher in a four-year college or university and demonstrated experience in research or special study work may be substituted for the four years of experience.

Required Qualifications:
  • General knowledge of administrative survey principles and techniques and skill in their application.
  • General knowledge of principles of organization and management; thorough knowledge of the subject area of the assignment.
  • Working knowledge of statistical methods.
  • Ability to relate the overall objectives and policies of the Trustees, the Office of the Chancellor and the administration and faculties of the campus to analytical and research studies.
  • Ability to see the interrelationships within and among the various educational, administrative, and fiscal programs on the campuses.
  • Sensitivity to the special needs of various campuses because of different size, location, characteristics, and circumstances.
  • Ability to approach problems objectively.
  • Ability to present findings and recommendations clearly and diplomatically and to reconcile, to the extent possible, various divergent points of view.
  • Ability to utilize complex statistical and other types of research methods.
  • Ability to draw conclusions and develop recommendations, to prepare written reports, and to develop and level contacts including the leading of meetings and negotiations.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in institutional research.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of database extraction, usage, data element dictionaries, and experience using data extraction software (e.g., SQL).
  • Proficiency in one or more of the following statistical packages: SAS, SPSS, STATA, R.
  • Knowledge of advanced research techniques and methodologies.
  • Understanding of data specifications, elements, dictionaries, reporting structures, and reporting requirements for federal, state, CSU, and accrediting mandates.
  • Experience designing and performing data visualizations and using data visualization software (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, etc.).



Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,698 - $7,045 per month

Classification Salary Range: $5,698 - $10,309 per month

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Position Information:

Work status: Full-time/Exempt/Probationary

Schedule: Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.
