The Gardener Level 2 position mid-level is a position and is responsible for the landscape maintenance, care, and upkeep of all woody and herbaceous plants within their assigned areas.
Other responsibilities include assisting the Garden Specialist to insure proper horticulture standards are met within all other areas of Garden areas.
Training and / or professional experience in horticulture and landscape maintenance required. Must have practical experience in the cultivation and care of woody and herbaceous plants.
Must have a valid driver's license. Must complete WPS training within 5 days of hire. Must have a GA commercial pesticide license or obtain one within 180 days of hire.
Long hours sometimes required. Potentially hard physical labor, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects.
Ability to stand, squat and / or kneel for long periods of time. Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather. Ability to operate small tools, lawn and gardening equipment.
Ability to operate heavy equipment preferred. Ability to work in a pond containing fish.
Be able to evaluate and select among alternative courses of action quickly and accurately. Be able to work well in high-pressure situations while maintaining composure and objectivity, including the ability to listen carefully to and resolve guest issues to the satisfaction of the affected guests.
Be able to identify potential guest issues and then develop methodologies to prevent or limit the impact of those guest issues during the course of guest visits.
Be able to assimilate complex information and data from various sources and consider, adjust, or modify to meet the constraints of the particular need.
Be able to effectively listen to, understand, and clarify concerns and issues raised by team members and guests. Be able to perform basic math functions.
Be able to convey information and ideas clearly and effectively so that ownership of high levels of guest service is understood to be the role of each individual team member.
Interacts with guests and team members, at all times, in a friendly, service-oriented manner. Maintains regular attendance in compliance with Callaway Gardens' standards, as required by scheduling that will vary according to the needs of Callaway Gardens' business levels to include some holidays and weekends.
Maintains high standards of personal appearance and grooming to include wearing a nametag when working.
Complies at all times with Callaway standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient operations. Maintains a friendly and warm demeanor at all times with both team members and guests.
Has knowledge and understanding of all department policies and procedures.
Keeps accurate records to include plant records and pesticide application logs. Maintains all plant label needs in designated garden areas.
Reports needs for materials and equipment to manager.
Maintains and responsible for assigned small tools and supplies. Maintains the horticultural standards of Callaway Gardens with a sense of urgency and focus with attention to detail in an efficient and productive manner.
Practices proper horticultural techniques to include planting, watering, weeding, pruning, pest control, fertilization, dead heading, plant production, and plant identification.
Is responsible for the proper care of all woody and herbaceous plant material in designated garden areas.
Occasionally working with the Education Department on garden interpretation and assisting with educational opportunities to include leading walks, tours and other programming as assigned.
Operates and instructs others in the operation of all equipment pertaining to their specific job. Insures all equipment is properly maintained.
Plans daily tasks and weekly projects with direction from department supervisor. Works with volunteers as needed. Ability to work with little or no supervision.
Follows instructions, written or verbal. Attends all meetings / training as required by supervisor or manager. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or management.
