What are the responsibilities and job description for the Purchasing Manager position at Canfor?
The Opportunity:
Reporting to the Maintenance Superintendent, the Purchasing Manager plans, organizes, constructs and controls the procurement of maintenance, repair and operational materials and services for the Plant. They are responsible for maintaining a secure and organized environment for spare parts inventories ensuring availability of critical spares and top condition of parts when needed.
Responsibilities:
- Manage all aspects of the purchasing process, maintaining strict adherence to appropriate laws of purchasing and Canfor Southern Pine policy
- Participate in the planning, material storage, equipment ordering/rental for major repairs and shutdowns
- Routinely monitor and evaluate vendor/contractor performance
- Conduct/participate in vendor negotiation activities including pricing, guarantee, quality, shipments and adjustments
- Incorporate a structured bid system for equitable vendor selection
- Calculate Economic Order Quantities (EOQ) for standard inventoried items
- Measure and document cost savings achieved through the application of structured purchasing procedures
- Develop/participate Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for purchasing procedures, processes and inventory control, staying current with regulations and policies
- Provide direction and supervision of assistant purchasing and warehouse personnel
- Develop/participate inventory reduction strategies and use inventory reduction tools routinely
- Work closely with Central Purchasing and mill personnel to standardize inventory items used throughout the organization
Requirements:
- Exceptional business acumen developed from a minimum of 5 years of manufacturing industry experience
- Recognized Purchasing, Accounting, or Finance designation an asset
- Strong technical skills in CMMS/MP2, business intelligence software packages, and MS Office applications
- TDG training would be an asset
- Solid understanding of inventory management theory and practices and general market/commodity economics
- Superior negotiating, financial analysis and risk management skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills; strong leadership skills; strong verbal, written and oral presentation skills
- Highly motivated with the ability to work independently with a strong sense of urgency
- Must have valid driver's license and vehicle
