What are the responsibilities and job description for the Road Maintenance Worker position at Carroll County Fiscal Court?
SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE:
Under the general supervision of the Road Maintenance Supervisor/OR the Assistant Road Maintenance Supervisor, performs a variety of tasks involving construction, maintenance and repairs to the County roads, facilities and equipment, parks, and building maintenance. The Road Maintenance Worker may operate a truck, plow, heavy equipment, hand tools, motorized equipment, mowers, tractors and various other equipment. Assignments are supervised and outlined by the Road Maintenance Supervisor/OR the Assistant Road Maintenance Supervisor who will delegate duties and inspect the progress of work completed, in conformance with established standards and specifications, safety and economy of operations. Employees in this position are expected to exercise some judgment in work methods and planning detail.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Drive Trucks, haul & stockpile dirt, gravel & salt, blacktop and fill for road and street construction repairs;
- Patch roads and streets with hot and cold blacktop mix, resurface roads, grading roads, rolling roads, graveling roads;
- Check Culverts and shoulders: clean and flush storm sewers with flusher and rodder;
- Erect road signs in accordance with state requirements, install & repair, make new signs as necessary;
- Operate power equipment including attachments, maintain & repair equipment in good operating condition;
- Perform carpentry and masonry work in constructing and repairing streets, roads, sidewalks, curbs, catch basins and manholes;
- Pick up trash and debris, clean catch basins and remove leaves;
- Perform shop work, welding and carpentry work on County property;
- Operate chainsaws, removal and hauling of trees, brush and stumps. Mowing, brushing, and clearing right of ways;
- Answer emergency calls and explain situations to public if necessary;
- Community Center repairs, maintenance, snow shoveling/plowing, & salt application as needed;
- Other duties as assigned by the Road Maintenance Supervisor or Assistant Road Maintenance Supervisor.
- Carroll County essential personnel (24/7 emergency response) and is expected to respond to emergency calls when applicable.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent AND ONE (1) YEAR of responsible road maintenance and construction experience, including experience maintaining the types of roads and road surfaces found in Carroll County; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Applicants must possess or be in the process of obtaining a Class B CDL(minimum) within six (6) months of hire.

Work is subject to performance in both indoor and outdoor environments; outside work occurs on a frequent basis and requires exposure to dust, fumes, or high noise levels and extreme weather conditions, and frequent travel.
