The Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES is now hiring a Technology Coordinator. This is an administrative and technical position responsible for planning, directing and supervising the development, support and operation of technology services in the BOCES. Responsibilities include the management and oversight of technology assets such as computer systems, voice and data communication networks, software and peripheral devices. Other technology and electronic systems may be included. Responsibilities also include the safeguarding of the BOCES network and the data. The incumbent is expected to exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in implementing and maintaining functional, efficient and cost-effective technology solutions that support the educational and administrative goals of the organization. This position is expected to have considerable knowledge in the use and capabilities of computer hardware, applications and network computing technologies in an educational environment. Support of both educational and business information technology utilizing industry and regional standards is required. Research and providing recommendations for emerging technologies is expected. Supervision is exercised over subordinate personnel. Does related work as required.

Work Year: Twelve (12) Months
Qualification: This is a Competitive Civil Service Position. The successful candidate will have to pass the civil service exam for this position.

- Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four -year college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in computer science, computer information systems, electrical technologies, information resource management, or closely related field, AND two years of full-time paid experience in a network environment; OR
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two -year college with an Associate's Degree in computer science, computer information systems, electrical technologies or closely related field, AND four years of full-time paid experience in a network environment; OR
- Graduation from High School or equivalent AND six years of full -time paid experience in a network environment; OR
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience as described in the limits of (A), (B), or (C) above.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Provides accessible central point of reference for communication and information pertaining to the BOCES computer and technology functions;
- Evaluates and recommends acquisition of computer hardware and software to meet automation needs of the BOCES;
- Responsible for the operation and update of the BOCES network system; including various network related systems and equipment such as networked security, camera, and building access systems, ID systems, sound and presentation systems, public safety systems, and VOIP telephone systems;
- Understanding of a Virtualized Server Environment, including data retention and protection
- Understanding of the current NIST standards and their implementation as they pertain to educational institutions/organizations
- Understanding of NYS Education Regulations governing providing services as well as ED LAW 2D.
- Provides Cybersecurity services, including implementation, oversight, and training
- Acts as liaison between organization and technology providers/vendors in both procurement and problem resolution.
- Responsible for maintaining and upgrading the BOCES Technology, Cybersecurity, Cybersecurity Response and Remote Learning plans
- Supervises technical and other subordinate staff in conducting work on computers and computer network, copy services, and courier services; May train subordinates;
- Maintains records on machine and system performance and contacts appropriate technical personnel in the event of machine or software malfunction;
- Keeps informed on new developments in computer hardware and software and reviews publications and specifications;
- Keeps updated as to the issues of compliance with laws and regulations where such issues could adversely affect the education of the
- BOCES students in computer education and library media areas;
- Provides expertise and assistance to the BOCES staff; Instructs new and existing staff regarding the use of computer technology equipment, operating systems and application software;
- Maintains communication with national, state, and local educational technology organizations;
- Coordinates efforts to address relevant compatibility issues for computer utilization;
- May act as Network Administrator that would include network maintenance and server management;
- May be responsible for all computer installation and repair as well as installation of software;
- Maintains and disseminates information of technology grants and grant sources;
- Supports programs, events, projects, and activities as directed by district committees, the Director of Instructional Support Services and/or the Superintendent;
- May develop and implement computer usage, internet, and email policies;
- Assists the business office with regard to financial impact and cost analysis for all matters related to the computer technology within the BOCES;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Good knowledge of principles, techniques, and concepts of microcomputer use and operation;
- Good technical knowledge of local and wide area networks;
- Good knowledge of network protocols and management systems;
- Good knowledge of current network operating systems, e.g., Windows, IOS, Chrome etc.;
- Good technical ability with and knowledge of computer networks and network servers, as well as the ability to assimilate network technologies;
- Good knowledge of application of various types of technology equipment to accounting, statistical and database management problems;
- Working knowledge of office terminology, practices and procedures;
- Working knowledge of design of current technology equipment and infrastructure;
- Ability to advise, supervise, and train others in technology operation and software applications;
- Ability to install and use purchased software;
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
- Ability to prepare written program and operation documentation;
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of others;
- Initiative and resourcefulness;
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
- Ability to work independently and on a team.
Physical Requirements:
- Bend, stoop, squat, kneel, push, pull, lift, crawl, stair climb, stand, sit, and walk intermittently for up to a total of eight (8) hours per day, five (5) days per week.
- Grasp, reach and maintain hand control;
- Work in an environment that may involve indoor or outdoor inclement weather work and exposure to odors, animals and fumes;
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position, including ability to work successfully in the environment of constant change.
