Mental Health Peer Support Specialist

Center for Human Development Inc. is seeking a full-time Peer Support Specialist.


The person hired for this position will have a history of mental health issues and will have received therapy services at some point in their history. This person will share their life pertinent experiences in their work with clients. This employee will understand and respect each client's point of view, experiences and preferences, and work with other CHD staff to maximize client choice, self-determination and decision making in the planning and delivery of treatment. They will provide peer counseling and consultation to individuals, families and other staff as needed. They will also provide rehabilitation and support functions as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a history of mental health issues and have received therapy services at some point in history. 
  • Must meet recovery mentor requirement of two years in recovery.
  • Must pass criminal history background check and drug screening.
  • Must possess a valid Oregon Driver's license and be insurable for client service purposes, travel between business offices, and to attend required meeting and/or trainings.

 

Essential Job Functions:


  • Must be familiar with community resources for peers.
  • Consider ways to be engaged in purposeful relationships to build stronger, healthier individuals and communities.
  • Connect with individual peers and groups of peers in a way that contributes to both people learning and growing.
  • Create a community type relationship with peers rather than a service type relationship with peers and maintain a professional working relationship to colleagues.
  • Assist peers to access community, such as getting to employment, appointments, social activities, and shopping
  • Assist peers with activities of daily living, such as housekeeping, hygiene, meal preparation, shopping, light moving, etc.
  • Assist peers with opportunities to socialize and receive support.
  • Provide resource and referral information including employment, therapy services and benefits.
  • Assist peers on an individual basis to reduce stress, manage symptoms, and improve self-advocacy skills.
  • Assist peers on individual basis to feel supported and safe during personal crisis.
  • Adhere to ethical standards of peer support and CHD.
  • Must maintain punctual and regular work attendance.
  • Must have the ability to maintain positive and professional working relationships with co-workers, clients and other agencies.
