Position Summary

The library specialist is responsible for assisting patrons with their information needs, managing library resources, organizing and maintaining library collections, providing research assistance, and promoting library programs and services.

This position assists with cataloging, interlibrary loan services, technology support, and coordinating library events and workshops.

The specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of a library setting and providing excellent customer service to library users.

Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Checks library materials in and out, maintaining accurate circulation records.
  • Supervises, directs, and trains library student employees in circulation duties.
  • Assembles and arranges display materials to enhance library presentations.
  • Troubleshoots problems with hardware and software systems in the library.
  • Maintains and repairs hardware and software, including computers, media equipment, scanners, copiers, and printers.
  • Utilizes library databases and online sources to assist patrons with research inquiries.
  • Assists patrons in conducting research and evaluating search results and reference materials.
  • Teaches students how to access information and research topics related to coursework.
  • Aids faculty and staff in locating resources for research projects or studies.
  • Delivers patron-centered programs and services to enhance library experiences.
  • Teaches classes and provides instruction on information resources and basic information literacy skills.
  • Develops and maintains information access aids, including electronic pathfinders and online tutorials.
  • Collaborates with faculty to select information resources and training aids for classes.
  • Evaluates and selects new books, videos, and materials for library collections.
  • Coordinates interlibrary loans, organizes library materials, and maintains accurate circulation records.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Understanding of library cataloging systems, classification systems and metadata standards.
  • Knowledge of library research methods, information literacy principles, and database search techniques.
  • Familiarity with library circulation procedures, including check-in, check-out, and overdue materials handling.
  • Knowledge of library collection development principles, including selection, acquisition, and deselection processes.
  • Understanding of copyright laws, fair use policies, and intellectual property rights as they relate to library materials and services.
  • Awareness of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in library science and information management.
  • Knowledge of library management software and integrated library systems (ILS) used for cataloging, circulation, and patron services.
  • Strong customer service skills to assist library patrons, answer inquiries, and provide research assistance in person, by phone, or online.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively convey information, instructions, and library policies to patrons and colleagues.
  • Organizational skills to manage library collections, maintain accurate records, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Attention to detail in cataloging and processing library materials, ensuring accuracy and consistency in bibliographic records.
  • Proficiency in using technology tools and software applications, including library databases, electronic resources, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Problem-solving skills to resolve patron issues, troubleshoot technical problems, and address library-related challenges.
  • Collaborative skills to work effectively with library staff, faculty, students, and administrators to support academic and research needs.
  • Ability to adapt to changing library environments, user needs, and technological advancements in information resources and services.
  • Customer-focused mindset with a commitment to providing equitable access to library materials and resources for all patrons.
  • Flexibility to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic and fast-paced library setting.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a standard office or indoor environment. Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions, however, employees may be exposed to minor inconveniences such as occasional noise, exposure to computer screens, crowded working conditions, and / or minor heating, cooling or ventilation problems.

Physical Demands

Sedentary Work : Performing the essential functions typically requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and / or a negligible amount of force frequently.

Minimum Qualifications :

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree

At least two (2) years of full-time work experience

At least one (1) year of related library experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience OR enrolled in a MLIS program

Additional Preferred Qualifications :

collection development experience for STEM subjects

experience in Teen / Adult programming or other Library Outreach activities

Information literacy instruction or other teaching experience
