The Staff Speech-Language Pathology Assistant is responsible for participating in the application of a variety of speech and cognitive therapeutic techniques for the rehabilitation of patients. Work is full time during weekdays. Work is performed at the clinic with some work occasionally at the residential site or in the community. This position is PRN.

JOB DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS 
  • Contributes to the examination and evaluation of patients, identifies communication/cognitive problems, including the type of problems such as cognition, dysarthria, apraxia, language, dysfluency, dysphagia, etc., the causal and/or maintaining factors, and the severity of the problems.  Implements patient treatment programs (therapy and home programs).  Treatment activities may include, but are not limited to, the Cognition Module, Attention Module, Auditory Rehabilitation Module, Echoic Store, Iconic Store, orientation, passive breathing, thermal stimulation, etc. Consistently updates/keeps Speech-Language Pathologist up to date on the progress to ascertain the program's effectiveness. Requires visual and auditory acuity, verbal ability, fine motor coordination, problem-solving, judgment, and planning abilities, to evaluate and treat patients. 
  • Assists in administering, scoring, and interpreting highly specialized diagnostic tests.  
  • Determines whether there is some organic basis for the communication problem through examination of the patient's oral peripheral mechanism and review of the medical records.   Requires visual and auditory acuity, fine motor coordination, and safety awareness to administer examinations and treatment following set procedures and policies. 
  • Assists the Speech-Language Pathologist with the patient’s oral peripheral mechanism and review of the medical records, without interpretation.  
  • Performs reporting procedures. 
  • Consults with patients, families and therapists from various clinic disciplines to instruct, advise or inform them of procedures and tests.  Plans clinical programs under the direction of a Speech-Language Pathologist and/or Clinical Case Manager assigned to a specific patient's case.  Determines recommendations for length of treatment and intensity of the program

PREFERRED DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS 

  • Conducts in-house training sessions regarding Speech-Language Pathology when needed. 
  • Assists in the establishment of department policies and procedures. 
  • Supervises speech students as requested. 
  • Transports patients as needed.

 SPECIAL SKILLS UTILIZED, EDUCATION LEVEL, TRAINING 

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders. 
  • Current or eligible for state Speech-Language Pathology Assistant licensure. 
  • Acute or post-acute rehabilitation experience is preferred. 
  • COVID vaccination with booster (when eligible) is required.
