Job Summary:

As a member of the team, the Dean of Students is responsible for assisting in the oversight of the administrative, behavioral and academic progress of students at all grade levels. The Dean of Students is primarily responsible for fostering formation, character development and personal growth among students at NorthStar Academies as managed by Edison learning. The Dean of Students will collaborate with staff, students and families to develop a school environment that is inclusive, relevant and engaging of all stakeholders to build strong learning community. The Dean of Students will strive to ensure that all Northstar Academy students are empowered with the knowledge, character and leadership skills to graduate from the school and serve the common good. The Dean of Students will work alongside the instructional team and other leaders under the guidance of the principal. The role of the Dean of Students will be responsible to understand and demonstrate the importance of effective communication with students, school personnel, and parents. The Dean of Students coordinates formation events and series, meets with students regularly for mentorship, offers students correction and accountability necessary for personal growth, and joins in the events and activities.


The Dean of Students works as a part of the team in order to meet the needs of all students. The building of relationships are a critical component of this learning environment, the team works together to identify student needs that may be barriers to success. Dean of Students collaborates with team members to analyze different means of meeting student needs and communicates with students, parents, and other team members about student progress and plans for next steps.


Essential Responsibilities
:

  • Maintain a high-quality learning environment with respect to the code of conduct;
  • Coordinates the orderly conduct of students during arrival and departure;
  • Monitor all discipline files and documentation necessary for parent meetings;
  • Uphold the district’s student conduct code;
  • Monitor and adheres to Board and State policies for student attendance;
  • Counsels students to acknowledge and manage responsible personal conduct;
  • Helps resolve problems that impede student learning and/or participation in school activities;
  • Supports a full range of educational options; works with intervention assistance teams (IAT),participates in parent conferences and IEP meetings as requested;
  • Demonstrate a high level of professional maturity, including emotional constancy in stressful situations, the ability to bring out the best in others, a solution seeker, and acts as a positive force to motivate others;
  • Send weekly Schedules to Principal;
  • Provide school leadership and Management Team with all relevant data and reports to effectively manage school;
  • Oversee all student behavior with emphasis of students in class: learning position, on task, eyes on the speaker etc.;
  • Organize and implement all lunchroom systems and procedures;
  • Oversee student investigations and document all referred incidents;
  • Maintain a culture of high expectations for student behavior and a no excuses environment with respect to misconduct;
  • Participates in professional growth opportunities;
  • Takes proactive approach to ensure staff/student safety; watches for student behavior that may indicate a problem (e.g., profanity, teasing, bullying, distress, etc.);
  • Intervenes and works with staff to eliminate unacceptable adult/student behavior;
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records, submits reports on time as well as maintain district records for the maximum period mandated by law and/or board policy;
  • Helps supervise the collection, entry, and verification of educational management information and student data (e.g., EMIS, etc.) as directed;
  • Research all (including new) legal issues with regard to the school code of conduct and students’ rights; send weekly email to Principal Academic Officer of weekly research;
  • Create a professional learning community in which teachers regularly collaborate to reflect on and refine Student Life and Management at the school using achievement data, student work, and their own observations/experiences;
  • Establish a school culture that is centered on core values that ultimately shows deep care for each student and staff member and holds each student and staff member to the highest level of accountability;
  • Develop solutions to complex problems that involve multiple stakeholders and steps;
  • Develop a disciplined planning process that identifies the school’s highest priorities;
  • Shares a sense of urgency about achievement for ALL students;
  • Schedule and direct students forums or hall meetings as necessary;
  • Periodically identifies and coordinates speakers to come to campus to address the student body on topics relating to personal formation;
  • Participates in New Student Orientation weekend to educate students on formation opportunities and conduct policies;
  • Maintains working relationship with local authorities and the community regarding student behavior off campus;
  • Operates within schools’ budget and providing a report of expenditures to the Principal;
  • Develops learning outcomes, conducts assessment, Annual Work Plan goals and preparesand carries out Institutional Effectiveness plans and reports for programs and initiatives;
  • Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum, student needs and assessments;
  • Monitor student progress towards graduation;
  • Convenes scheduled meetings with Guidance Counselors and / or Academic Advisor and Principal to discuss individual cases and the well-being of the student body;
  • Provides information to the Principal regarding teachers’ effectiveness in classroom management and student control;
  • Utilizes behavior modification strategies to achieve desired positive behavior;
  • Conducts tour of the building to ensure that school and school board policies are being enforced and correct non-compliance;
  • Recommends appropriate sanctions including detentions, suspensions and referrals to the Principal for appropriate action;
  • Maintain ongoing communication with parents, staff, and community as needed;
  • Become proficient in the use of computer based instruction and software;
  • Keep accurate documentation regarding student progress, needs, strengths, grades, observations, anecdotal records, and other related data;
  • Maintain student records and files in a confidential manner;
  • Manage the learning environment and coach students as an advisor and mentor;
  • Contribute to a culture of professionalism among team members;
  • Other duties assigned;

Required

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degree in the related field
  • A valid teaching certificate
  • Minimum two years of Experience in Student Affairs
  • Three years’ experience managing groups and peers
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook
  • Knowledge of Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)


Preferred

  • Bi-Lingual
  • Evidence of working knowledge and comfort level with instructional technology
  • Experience working with young people especially in areas of formation and discipline
  • Understanding of behavioral interventions
  • Experience working with at-risk student population
