Overview and Position Description
Charting Careers mission is to inspire youth to discover their power and reach their goals through transformative mentoring, life-enriching opportunities, family partnership and by serving as champions for equity. We partner with students (and their families) in 2rd grade through middle, high school, and beyond, focusing on students primarily living in public and subsidized housing in Annapolis. Individual mentoring begins in 5th grade.
The Mentor Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, screening, selecting, matching, and training mentors and for the ongoing support of approximately 35 goal-based mentor-mentee relationships. This person helps design, lead, and evaluate our mentoring programs adhering to principles of effective mentoring. The Mentor Coordinator facilitates transformative mentoring relationships through monthly team building experiences and individualized ideas and resources specific to the Mentor Coordinator’s understanding of each scholar’s needs, barriers and goals. The position involves expertise in assessment, goal setting, change theory, relationship building, healthy boundaries, trauma-informed care, and social emotional support.
The Mentor Coordinator engages in ongoing coordination with the Charting Careers Education and Family Partnership Coordinators to build a network of support for our participants, their families, and our volunteers. The Mentor Coordinator serves as an advocate for equity by forging new relationships, and supporting existing ones, with partners who can provide life-enriching opportunities to participants, including scholarships, transportation, summer camps, classes, etc.
Position Goals and Measurable Outcomes:
- Build the Charting Career volunteer network so that we continue to have a qualified, passionate, and diverse group of mentors
- Mentors reflect the makeup of our community.
- Mentors report that they feel appreciated and respected.
- Plan and implement an effective, evidence-based mentoring program for middle, high school, and college scholars
- 100% of middle, high school, and beyond students who are ready for a mentor are matched with a mentor
- 75% of mentors and mentees finish the year together
- 75% of mentors report on survey they feel supported, appreciated, good match, and learned something new
- Monthly events are well attended and valued
- 75% of mentees report their mentoring relationship is leading to increased support, life-enriching experiences and goal attainment
- 75% of mentor activity reports indicate active engagement in transformative mentoring activities including, supporting mentee’s goals, summer experiences, college planning, social/emotional needs and other life-enriching experiences (and if report does not show this, plans are in place to improve mentoring or to replace mentor).
Job Duties:
- Continue to build the Charting Careers volunteer network
- Design and implement our mentor recruitment and retention strategies
- Attend relevant community meetings to build relationships and recruit mentors and other volunteers
- Implement and continue to streamline our mentor selection, screening, onboarding, appreciation, and support processes
- Ensure appropriate mentor paperwork and background checks are completed and maintain organized, up-to-date, and secure documents and files
- Coordination of Mentor Program following Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring
- Recruit and select one-to-one and group mentors
- Plan and facilitate mentor orientation/training
- Match Charting Careers students to mentors based on interviews and relationships with students
- Plan and facilitate on-going training (Mentor Practice Series) for mentors, incorporating a racial equity lens and using the Mentor MD resources
- Support mentors in building their relationships with their mentees and provide feedback; have regular check-ins with each mentor
- Assist mentors in documenting meetings with mentees through weekly or monthly reporting
- Collaborate with other Charting Careers staff to develop the program calendars for the year, especially the team building and mentor training aspects
- Support the student and mentor goal development process
- Plan and implement group mentoring/team building events, as least six times per year
- Check-in regularly with the Education Coordinator, Family Partnership Coordinator, and Executive Director
- Continue to grow as a Mentor Coordinator and mentor leader in the community by, when possible, attending relevant training sessions, staying up-to-date on the research in the field, and participating in relevant community events, such as MENTOR MD and MOST events.
- Participate as part of Charting Careers Community and Leadership Team
- Attend programming with program participants in order to build relationships
- Assist with organizational planning, coordination, and evaluation
- Attend regular leadership team and case management meetings
- Attend Charting Careers’ celebrations, such as the Scholarship Night, Family BBQs, etc.
- Support program evaluation efforts, including writing summary notes of activities and supporting administration of surveys to volunteers
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a related field, such as social work, school counseling
- Excellent assessment and goal setting skills
- Excellent ability to communicate a non judgemental and compassionate stance while driving movement towards goals in both adults (mentors) and youth (mentees)
- Excellent relationships building skills with both youth and adults
- Passion for racial equity and social justice
- Experience working with youth and managing volunteers or employees
- Superior communication, relationship building, and leadership skills
- Strong administrative skills
Hours, Compensation, and Work Environment:
- Hourly position, averaging 18 hours per week. Hours are fairly flexible, but some day time and evening times are required
- $40-$45 per hour; currently, no benefits are offered
- A mixture of working from home, our office in Eastport, and from different Annapolis-area locations
