Chicago Sports Network (CHSN) is seeking a Technical Manager to ensure the seamless delivery of live televised sports events. This key role serves as the main point of contact for technology, operations, and production within the network. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience managing large outside broadcast teams and handling live broadcast systems, thriving in high-pressure environments, especially on game days.

The Technical Manager must have a strong technical background, with expertise across various disciplines, and a deep understanding of the complexities involved in producing national sports broadcasts. Strong leadership skills are essential for effective collaboration with employees, third-party vendors, and stadium staff.

This role involves coordinating technical and operational aspects with all parties and being present at all events to ensure production goals are met, with a solid game plan and contingency plans in place.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Manage field production operations and engineering on prime events
  • Guarantee the delivery, connectivity, and transmission from all game events
  • Serve as the liaison between event facility, sports teams, tech vendors, location support and freelance and full-time broadcast technicians
  • Primary POC for all game related production facilities
  • Experience with location site surveys, documentation, knowledge transfer
  • Technical expertise in video engineering, complex audio and coms systems and transmission hardware and signal flow
  • Prioritize tasks relevant to production continuity for pre-game, post-game and during the game.
  • Oversee production, facilitate workflow and assist in troubleshooting in “cloud room” for CHSN road shows.
  • Manage and demonstrate an in depth understanding of multiple moving parts in a live sports production environment
  • Partner with the Executive Producer and CHSN engineering team
  • Collaborate internally and externally to ensure a flawless execution of all events and contingencies
  • Establish strong relationships with external vendors and clients to maintain the production calendar
  • Coach, mentor, and train staff to meet and exceed objectives while consistently growing their skills and capabilities

Minimum Qualifications And Requirements

  • 10 years of experience in a live TV environment, with 5 years of experience as a Technical Manager or Sr. Engineer
  • Technical qualification is preferred
  • Strong understanding of broadcast systems, signals, connectivity and signal flow
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight timelines
  • Passion for and deep understanding of the sporting environment and sporting calendars is essential
  • Ability to work non-traditional business hours is required. This includes holidays, weekends, early mornings, late nights, or on short notice.

The Chicago Sports Network (CHSN) will launch in October across multiple platforms. The network will air more than 300 live Blackhawks, Bulls and White Sox games annually and include pre- and postgame coverage while showing multisport programming 24 hours a day. CHSN will broadcast from studios located in both Chicago's United Center and Guaranteed Rate Field. The network will start airing Blackhawks and Bulls preseason games in October, showing White Sox games beginning in 2025.
