Job Description:


The Meteorology Supervisor manages a team of meteorologist that provide predictive services and forecasting support for the Catastrophe Command Center (CCC) for wildfires, hurricanes and all-perils for insurance industry and other clients in addition to assisting the Air Quality and Smoke Management divisions.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily workflow within the Meteorology department
  • Perform performance evaluations and evaluating merit increases accordingly
  • Manages discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policies and procedures
  • Review timecards and expenses

Job Classification: Full-time, exempt

Compensation: $75,000 - $85,000 per year (Chloeta reserves the right to offer any candidate above or below the listed compensation amount based on experience or business needs.)


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for collecting weather data, developing strategic and tactical fire behavior information, predicting fire growth, and interpreting fire characteristics for use by overhead
  • Gather critical information pertinent to field operations (e.g., weather forecasts, climatology, critical fire weather patterns, previous observed fire behavior, etc.)
  • Identify, analyze, and use relevant situational information to make informed decisions and take appropriate actions
  • Communicate Fire Weather Watches/Warnings, Spot Weather Forecasts, and Fire Weather Forecasts to fireline resources
  • Ensure that weather data is observed and provides validation of analyses and forecasts
  • Ensure appropriate weather information is provided to other functional areas as scheduled and requested
  • Monitor and address air quality impacts to personnel and clients
  • Request current weather observation from field resources as needed and validate your forecast
  • Remain apprised of current fire activity level on a national and regional basis
  • Anticipate the operational period’s largest challenges for fire weather and fire behavior and communicate concerns to those who could be impacted in the field
  • Immediately notify supervisor(s) and colleagues of changes in fire weather or fire behavior that may affect clients and firefighting safety
  • Characterize fuels (fuel types, loadings, moistures) via satellite and other remote sensing sources
  • Inventory significant terrain features ahead of the fire to help determine how and where fire may move, via satellite and other remote sensing sources
  • Estimate anticipated fire behavior in view of the current situation and the expected changes
  • Monitor fire behavior to validate predictions, document behavior, and anticipate potential safety concerns
  • Provide weather and fire behavior information to support planning, decision documents, and strategic direction [e.g., wildland fire decision support documentation, Incident Status Summary (ICS 209), or coordination calls]
  • Select the applicable tools for deterministic and/or probabilistic fire behavior analysis
  • Observe the fire environment and the resulting fire behavior to understand critical factors and validate assumptions, inputs, and conclusions from analyses and forecasts.
  • Identify and monitor burn periods and thresholds for active fire behavior
  • Demonstrate ability to access weather station information, weather observations and NFDRS indices using appropriate fire danger processing application
  • Maintain a record of Fire behavior forecasts, weather forecasts, transition documents, and specialized reports/forecasts (e.g., firing operation plans or burn plans, etc.) as needed
  • Build, maintain, and document electronic filing structure for electronic resources, model inputs, and incident data
  • Monitor and forecast Atlantic basin tropical activity and compile into seasonal outlook and daily/weekly intelligence reports internally for managers and externally for clients

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to compose and present comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to provide the overall weather situation assessment for all shift staff at the onset of the shift.
  • Ability to contribute to initiation and implementation of immediate/emergency field operations and safety measures based on forecasted and observed weather conditions
  • Ability to provide decision support on both field and CAT Command Center staffing needs based on predicted weather
  • Ability to develop, prepare and issue all internal company weather warning, forecast and service products assigned to the CAT Command Center.
  • Ability to interpret Doppler radar data and satellite imagery, and the analysis of other meteorological and hydrologic data.
  • Ability to assess and select the appropriate and relevant data sets and ensures the resolution of questionable or conflicting data sets
  • Ability to provide weather advice and guidance to emergency managers internally among staff and externally to clients in hazardous weather situations.
  • Mastery of theoretical meteorology, including the dynamics of the atmosphere, mesoscale meteorology, and the application of computer methods of numerical weather analysis and prediction.
  • Mastery of applied meteorology, equivalent to several years of forecasting experience in the more challenging of forecast situations or environments.
  • Advanced knowledge of marine meteorology and/or tropical meteorology with special emphasis on hurricanes and/or coastal flooding, and the near shore marine environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of meteorological principles pertaining to other assigned special programs, such as fire weather, to provide forecast products and expert advice and guidance/performance to specialized users.
  • Proven ability in communications techniques, including effective writing and public speaking.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Required: Bachelor of Science in Meteorology or closely related field
  • Required: A minimum of two years of meteorology experience
  • Preferred: At least one year of employee management experience
  • Preferred: Master's degree in Meteorology or closely related field

Work Environment / Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds on occasion
  • This job operates in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
  • Extended shift lengths of 12 hours in the CAT Command Center are not common but can occur occasionally due to fire weather or tropical cyclone conditions

Drug and Alcohol Testing:

To enforce Chloeta’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy, an employee or candidate could be subject to undergoing a drug screen and/or alcohol testing at the beginning of employment, as well as after commencement of employment where there is reasonable suspicion of intoxication, or following an automobile or other accident, or as part of a company or facility-wide random drug screen process. Please be advised that this position is considered “safety-sensitive” for purposes of Chloeta’s drug and alcohol testing policy, pursuant to Oklahoma Statutes title 63, section 427.8(K).

Emergency Response:

Every Chloeta employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official Duty Station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official Position Description (PD). Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.
