Job Summary:
To facilitate the discovery of ideal career paths and assist members with their job placement. Duties include working with members to explore employment, assist with identifying transferrable skills and develop/support volunteer opportunities. This position is also responsible for teaching job search, resume writing and interviewing skills.
Education and qualifications:
Includes all of the Community Support Direct Support Professionals education and qualification plus;
1. Must have experience as an Employment Specialist, Job Coach or other related field
2. Experience in the IDD/DD field (but not required)
3. Networking experience
Physical Demands:
1. Must have the ability to walk, squat, kneel, bend, lift up to 50 pounds, and implement CPR when needed
2. Must be able to endure physical activity for long periods of time
3. Must be able to implement the concept of community inclusion
4. Must be able to remain calm in stressful situations
Work Hours:
The full time position of Career Specialist works from 8am to 4pm, Monday through Friday. These hours may be adjusted or extended depending on the event or activity.
Work Environment:
The Community Career Specialist must have the ability to work in indoor areas as well as outdoors in the community. There is a possibility of strain or injury from interacting with the participants in both settings.
Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
Includes all of the Community Support Career Specialist responsibilities and accountabilities plus
1. Acts as a good role model for Community Support DSP’s
2. Provides immediate direction and clarification for Community Support DSP’s
3. Ability to organize and set up community employment events
4. Interact with community members on a professional level
Specific Work Skills:
1. Work with members to explore employment options
2. Support members to identify transferable skills
3. Support members to develop employment skills
4. Develop/Support members with volunteer opportunities
5. Develop/Support members with job shadowing
6. Follow up with members about current employment
7. Train/educate DSP’s in regard to member employment goals
8. Career Planning
9. Communicate with member’s team in regard to employment
10. Attend PCP meetings to discuss employment
11. Assist with developing plans to overcome challenges/barriers to employment
General Community Program Duties:
1. Serves as role model for all employees, i.e., presents a positive attitude, implements programs correctly, adhering to agency policies and procedures
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
