Description
The City of Anaheim Public Works Department seeks a well qualified Skilled Crafts Worker I to perform, under close supervision, a variety of skilled crafts work in areas of carpentry, and plumbing as assigned or identified by requirements of the job or project.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the entry-level or limited experience classification within the Skilled Crafts Worker series. Incumbents at this level perform the less complex duties and responsibilities to those of the Skilled Crafts Worker II, and do so under close supervision and direction, progressing to minimal supervision as experience is gained. The Skilled Crafts Worker I is flexibly staffed and employees at this level may be eligible to progress to the II level following a minimum of one year at the I level, demonstrated proficiency in multiple trades, passing the requisite testing and fulfilling the requirements of the competency model, and upon management approval. Progression from I to II does not require a competitive examination process.
Essential Functions
The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Perform a variety of skilled labor in one or more assignment, including but not limited to, cabinetry, carpentry, locksmith, metal fabrication and machining/welding, plumbing, painting/finishing, and sign making; perform technical maintenance, repair, installation, alteration, and construction activities.
- Read and interpret technical manuals, sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.
- Accurately analyze and communicate conditions of job assignments.
- Maintain facility shop, tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Respond to customer complaints and inquiries regarding City facilities and buildings.
- Observe safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment.
- Lift and move heavy objects.
- Use of purchasing card to order or buy material as needed.

Qualifications
- Journey level experience in the skilled construction trade of carpentry and/or plumbing.
- Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, equipment, materials, and tools used in maintenance and repair of City buildings and facilities, including carpentry, plumbing, principles, theories, and standard practices of several maintenance trades as they apply to maintenance and repair of structures, machinery, and equipment; occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices; modern office practices, methods, computer equipment and basic computer software; principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting; safe driving rules and safe work practices; and customer service principles and techniques.
- Ability to as assigned, perform a full-range of journey or advanced journey-level duties and tasks in one or more of the following trades: carpentry, and plumbing follow both written and verbal instructions; safely operate a variety of hand tools and automated equipment; accurately analyze and communicate conditions of job assignments; read blue prints; read and write in English; perform basic mathematical calculations; perform duties of the job without causing harm to self or others; operate basic computer/PC and programs to include Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS); use tact, initiative, prudence, and judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines; communicate effectively; effectively deal with the public, vendors, contractors and City staff; and maintain positive working relationships.
- Depending on assignment, may be required to work evenings, holidays and weekends. May be on call 24/7.
- Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License by date of appointment.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS – The City contracts with the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) to provide retirement benefits. Retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS.
Note: Pension contribution limitations are set by CalPERS each calendar year, with compensation limit requirements for Public Employee Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) members and Classic members. Employee contributions will be deposited into a 401(a) account after reaching this limit. Employees with CalPERS membership dates prior to July 1, 1996 are not impacted by these limits.
