General Description
The purpose of this position is to perform skilled manual work in grounds maintenance and service activities in the care of landscapes and groundskeeping.
Work is carried out independently under the general supervision of the Streets and Grounds Operations & Maintenance Manager, or as assigned, and is reviewed though observation, conversation, and evaluations of results achieved. Essential Job Functions
Performs assigned tasks in the care and maintenance of lawns and landscaping on City-owned property and grounds. Performs a variety of grounds maintenance tasks, including fertilizing, aerating, and mowing of ornamental lawns, athletic fields, cemeteries, parks, street medians, or other areas assigned to the Ground Maintenance Division. Cleans planters, and picks up tree limbs, shrub trimmings, and other trash. Maintain clean work areas and sweep/clean shop and parking lots. Performs other tasks or duties assigned. Qualifications
High-school diploma or equivalent recognized certification and 3-4 years of experience in some degree of landscaping or equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid Florida driver's license (if using City vehicle). Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge - Specialized knowledge such as annuals, irrigations, chemical application, turf, tree and shrub care, inspections and ball field maintenance. Ability - Must have the ability to operate power driven riding lawn mowers and tractors, to perform such tasks as fertilizing, aerating and mowing of ornamental lawns, athletic fields, cemeteries, parks, street medians, or other areas assigned to the Ground Maintenance Division. Ability - Ability to use hand-tools such as, but not limited to, rakes, shovels, hoes, etc. Ability - Ability to use gasoline-powered equipment such as, but not limited to, hedge trimmers, weed eaters, edgers, push mowers, and chainsaws. Ability - Ability to operate heavy equipment, including mowers, light pickup trucks, bucket trucks, backhoes, tractors, trencher, and other related landscape machinery. Knowledge - Work requires efficiency in general grounds operations dealing with horticultural principles and practices. Knowledge - Knowledge of insects, parasites, diseases, and other infestations which affect trees, shrubs, plants, flowers, and grass and the application of insecticides, fungicide, and disinfectants for their control. Ability - Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and communicate clearly and concisely. Ability - Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public as necessitated by the work. Ability - Ability to perform heavy, strenuous manual labor, sometimes under unfavorable weather conditions and exposure to insects. Ability - Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability - Ability to perform specialized tasks without supervision. Physical Requirements
High frequency of standing and walking. Frequent speaking, detailing, typing, bending, stooping, reaching over head, kneeling, crawling, digging, and pushing and pulling. Occasional lifting of 50 pounds or more.
