What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Swim Coach position at City of Astoria?

SUMMARY

The Astoria Aquatic Center is looking for a Youth Swim Coach to provide coaching and training for a summer youth swim team for children ages 7-17. The current need is for a candidate with a swimming instruction/coaching background, to work primarily week-day evenings with youth, for up to 2 hours/day between the hours of 4pm and 7pm. This is anticipated to be a seasonal position July - August, with other potential limited opportunities throughout the year. This position is categorized in the Fitness Instructor job family.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Plans and teaches quality swimming exercise routines for youth, for up to 25 participants at a time, with an emphasis on safety and creating a positive experience for each participant. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Aquatic and Recreation Supervisor and in coordination with the Aquatic Coordinator.
  • Understands how the exercises affects the body and has the ability to modify the routine to assist students with differing skill levels.
  • Assists in maintaining high class participation by maintaining a positive demeanor and creating an atmosphere that is fun, encouraging, challenging, and safe.
  • Ensures proper time management for planned activities.
  • Selects music that is appropriate for the class and participants.
  • Keeps up to date on trends and improvements to the different styles of exercise and movement.
  • Safely operates available equipment, instructs in the safe operation of available equipment, and communicates equipment needs and maintenance issues accordingly.
  • Tracks attendance and ensures the student's class have checked in and paid.
  • Monitors attendance levels and discusses ways to improve attendance when needed with immediate supervisor.
  • Communicates effectively to participants, provides information and assistance to participants regarding general inquiries, programs, and schedules.
  • Ensures cleanliness of the fitness area and that proper safety protocol is followed.
  • Assists with implementation of special events and activities.
  • Assists in responding to emergency situations in the work place by following the emergency action plan, contacting the appropriate agencies, and documenting incidents and necessary.
  • Keeps certifications current according to assigned role.

  • Maintains punctual, regular and predictable attendance.
  • Maintains a neat and professional appearance and follows dress code protocol where assigned.
  • Respectfully takes direction from the supervisor.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and guidelines as described in the City of Astoria Personnel Manual, Parks and Recreation Department Manual, and other documentation related to this position.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. A current CPR/First Aid certification is required within 60 days of hire.
  3. City employees must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 (medical or religious exceptions may apply).
  4. Ability to pass a City-required background check which includes criminal and sex offender records checks.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  1. USA Swimming or American Swimming Coaches Association credentials.
  2. Water Safety Instructor Certification.

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

Employment will be contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.
