The City of Balch Springs Police Department is pleased to announce the
2023 Police Sergeant Promotional Exam process.
The following opportunity (Police Sergeant position) is a Closed Promotional opportunity, available only to any regular full time City police employee who has at least two years immediately before the examination date has continuously held a position in the classification that is immediately below, in salary, the classification for which the examination is to be held. The title of Police Sergeant is a first line supervisor that is promoted within compliance of Civil Service LGC 143. When assigned to a patrol function the Sergeant is the supervisor of the Police Officer and responsible for uniformed patrol functions of the shift. The Sergeant prepares daily assignments; prepares and presents roll call training; inspects personnel and equipment for conformity to Department standards; supervises patrol officers; reviews and approves various types of reports; prepares and investigates personnel complaints; responds to crime scenes; handles radio calls and dispatches personnel; keeps the supervisors informed of issues of concern to them; trains and supervises officers; and performs related functions. In the absence of the Police Lieutenant, the Sergeant may be a Watch Commander during his/her tour of duty.
Police Sergeant assigned to specialized sections perform specific duties characteristic of that section.
The Police Sergeant is responsible to the Police Lieutenant.
