JOB DEFINITION: Under direct supervision of police personnel, performs a variety of routine non-sworn tasks in an apprenticeship program framework. The Cadet Program is designed to introduce recent high school graduates and college students to a law enforcement career and to prepare them for entry into the Police Academy.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Perform reception duties; greet visitors and direct to appropriate staff; answer questions and provide general information to the public; answer phones and forward calls as appropriate; provide support assistance and learn the duties performed in the following areas: lobby reception, records, crime prevention, dispatch, patrol and property control; provide clerical support as needed; type, file, provide requested forms and reports and release vehicles to individuals as appropriate. Perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment and effective public communication techniques. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; learn, understand, interpret and apply Police Department policies and procedures; meet the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) medical guidelines; communicate in a clear and concise manner; think clearly, quickly and accurately in emergencies; work irregular hours as required; follow directions; prepare reports and records; perform any other tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily operations of the Department and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, staff, vendors, contractors, visitors, the general public and others having business with the City of Banning. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a minimum of 18 years of age, a maximum of 24 years of age and must be appointed prior to reaching 21st birthday. Must be a high school graduate or GED equivalent and be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in law enforcement related courses. Experience as a Police Explorer with any agency is highly desirable. Successful candidates will have some basic knowledge of modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment and effective public communication techniques.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver License. May require some weekend, holiday and evening work assignments.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, running, jumping, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping, and the ability to lift up to 25 pounds or more in the performance of daily activities. Requires both near and far vision and the ability to distinguish colors and acute hearing. Incumbents may work outdoors in all weather conditions. Entails working in hazardous situations, which may involve abusive persons, potential physical violence and the potential of risk of exposure to chemical and biological hazards.
