GENERAL PURPOSE:
This position provides administrative and supervisory support to the Parks and Recreation Director. This position is specifically responsible for developing and implementing the department’s marketing plan, social media presence, and special events. The Assistant Director assists with the leadership and management of the overall Parks and Recreation Department’s operations, including but not limited to budget preparation, personnel management, programming and planning. This position may assume the director's duties during the director's absence, as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of the methods and techniques of developing and operating recreation programs, team sports management, and rules and regulation of a variety of sports and recreational activities.
• Knowledge of community and public relations; principles and practices of general management including fiscal and human resources; budgeting processes and general accounting.
• Knowledge of computers and various software applications including spread sheets, word processing, excel etc.
• Knowledge of equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation program.
• Organizational skills.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to organize recreational leagues, establish team rosters and schedule games, tournaments, and other play activities.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, various age groups, other organizations, and the public.
• Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule with minimal supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School diploma or GED required.
• Valid New Mexico’s driver’s license required.
• Bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation; public administration, program management or related field required.
• Five (5) years progressively responsible experience in parks and recreation administration required.
• Three (3) years supervisory experience required.
• Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) preferred.
• Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) preferred.
• Must be willing to work towards acquiring certifications if needed.
• Able to work flexible hours, days, and holidays.
• Spanish bi-lingual preferred.
• Must pass pre-employment drug test and background.
• Any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to provide the applicant with the knowledge, skill, and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position will be considered.

Equipment used to include but not limited to office equipment, exercise equipment, ladders, work tools (screwdriver, wrenches, pliers), recreational equipment and park maintenance equipment.

- Assist the Director of Parks and Recreation in managing and directing the Parks and Recreation Department.
- Assist in developing department goals, objectives and department standard operating procedures.
- Plan, organize, coordinate, and generate funds for a variety of special events, such as Miracle on Main Street and the All-American Celebration.
- Responsible for marketing and advertising; utilize various media outlets to include social media to reach all segments of the public to promote special events, recreation programs, parks, educational opportunities, etc.
- Coordinate and lead debriefing exercises to evaluate existing programs and services to determine effectiveness; and recommend improvement.
- Assist in the preparation of departmental budget and revenue projections; monitor on-going expenditures to assure compliance with fiscal goals; establish fee schedules for program participation.
- Assist supervisors in the development of a section/department work plan; conduct training, assign work activities, projects and programs; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures.
- Assist in the development and implementation of long-range strategic plans regarding staffing, programs, and services to meet the needs of the community.
- Assist in selecting, training, motivating and evaluate personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; conduct performance evaluations; implement disciplinary procedures; maintain discipline and high standards required for the efficient and professional operation of the department.
- Serves as liaison and advisor to various committees and interest groups; coordinate and implement actions as needed to best serve community interests; prepare and deliver reports as needed to advise director and City leaders of program activities and results.
