Job Description
Position Summary
A Library Aide is a temporary, part-time position that performs repetitive duties and responsibilities which may include general clerical library tasks such as: shelving materials in either alphabetical or numerical order, packing, unpacking, checking in and sorting various materials in a variety of formats, as well as performing basic circulation functions such as checking in and securing library materials. The individual in this position will also need to push carts heavily laden with books, and they will be required to do some heavy lifting. This position will also work closely with other library personnel and patrons and requires evening hours.
Primary Responsibilities
Projects a positive and pleasant attitude to the public and cooperates and maintains and effective relationship with other staff members as part of a team
Shelves library materials
Locates requested items
Organizes books on shelves
Assists staff with checking materials for damage and removing them from the shelves
Processes new materials for circulation
Creates Displays
Helps develop and participates in Storytime
Adheres to library policies and procedures
Performs any other tasks as requested
Performs all duties and work activities in accordance with City policies, procedures and safety practices
Performs other duties as required
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
ATTENTION TO DETAIL - Performs a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and spped under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines COMMUNICATIONS & INTERPERSONAL SKILLS - Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Listen to and comprehend patron requests
Answer telephones and provide information regarding the Library and its services
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with the public and other employees EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE - Must have a high school diploma, GED or equivalent
Some previous library experience is preferred or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work TECHNICAL & ACCOUNTING SKILLS - Basic bookkeeping, cash handling and accounting methods and procedures
Operation of standard office equipment, personal computer and job-related software and hardware
Learn and apply Library policies and procedures
Learn and use new technologies
Keep records and compile reports Physical Abilities
Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively on the telephone and in person
Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and read, sort and catalog a variety of books, written documents and materials
Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate standard office equipment, computer equipment and other specialized library equipment
