Under general supervision, works with the Fleet Division Manager to coordinate the technical, administrative and customer service operations of the Fleet Maintenance Division. This position is responsible for making initial motor vehicle diagnostic assessments, coordinating the workflow of the shop and preparing vehicles for disposition or reassignment.
*This position performs duties deemed to be “safety sensitive" and is therefore subjected to random drug testing under the City’s policies*
- Receives vehicles and interprets information provided by users and vendors in order to diagnose maintenance issues and specify repairs to be performed and estimate service time.
- Prepares vehicle work orders and inspection forms, and coordinates scheduled vehicle maintenance through the fleet management system.
- Coordinates fleet activities by prioritizing and assigning tasks to ensure the timely completion of all work required in the maintenance, repair, service and/or removal of vehicles.
- Coordinates maintenance and repair jobs on City vehicles for in-house repairs and with appropriate vendors and dealers in order to expedite work and maximize benefits of warranties and service contracts.
- Responds to questions and/or complaints from users regarding work performed on vehicles in order to resolve problems or update users on status of job.
- Monitors the use, maintenance and repair requirements of vehicles in order to ensure serviceability, recommend replacement and/or schedule preventative maintenance.
- Analyzes inspection forms and work orders in order to determine the specific needs required for optimal equipment performance and reliability.
- Coordinates vehicle disposal and refurbishment by receiving turned-in vehicles and processing required paperwork for disposition, or preparing vehicles to be reissued.
- Receives, inspects, evaluates and processes documents for new, used and seized vehicles which have been procured or awarded to the City.
- Receives, inspects, evaluates and processes documents for damaged City vehicles.
- Coordinates accident repairs with glass replacement contractors, body shops and Risk Management Coordinator.
- Coordinates the transportation of vehicles to and from locations in order to facilitate timely delivery of repairs.
- Maintains records in order to provide accurate and current documentation of all shop activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of relevant city, state, and federal laws, regulations, and policies.
- Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of the function, repair, and maintenance of all types of construction, utility, refuse, and emergency vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in the use of power tools, hand tools, and shop equipment.
- Skill in reading and interpreting technical manuals and schematics.
- Skill in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of city vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in the use of computers and various software programs.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
- Ability to operate computers for data entry, word processing and/or accounting purposes.
- Ability to operate and repair small/light equipment, such as power tools.
- Ability to operate and repair medium equipment and machinery, such as vehicles or commercial mowers.
- Ability to operate and repair heavy or complex machinery, vehicles and construction equipment.
