CPD paralegals assist Law Department and outside attorneys with fulfilling discovery requests, processing legal preservation requests, and reviewing and preparing subpoena responses by working with Legal Affairs personnel and various units within CPD to obtain responsive materials.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES* Assists attorneys in all phases of pre-trial, trial, and post-trial functions, including those ranging from a routine to a complex nature
* Collects and organizes information and legal documents to respond to subpoenas and requests for information and to assist in motions, trials, and depositions
* Prepares and summarizes legal documents for attorney use
* Obtains records in response to discovery requests received by the Department of Law
* Review documents collected and produced in response to subpoenas to ensure compliance with privacy and juvenile laws
* Facilitates reviews of files by attorneys
* Processes preservation requests and legal holds

* Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree, and a paralegal certificate from a paralegal training program accredited by the American Bar Association, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

Selection Criteria
This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the interview will be selected.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
* Previous experience in a law enforcement or law firm/corporate law department setting.
* Previous experience with legal systems, legal filings, and legal research.
* Basic understanding of legal terminology.
VETERANS PREFERENCE: The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of The United States and have received an honorable or general discharge. The preference granted under this section shall be in the form of preference in processing. Eligible candidates must have at least six months (180 days) of active duty documented. To receive the veteran's preference, candidates need to indicate whether they are a veteran by answering "YES" or "NO" to the question on the online application AND attach one of the following documents:
* DD214-Member Copy 4. The copy must include discharge status, which is found on the Member Copy A letter from the United States Veterans Administration on official stationery stating a minimum of 180 days of active duty service and character of service. This letter must also include a copy of the applicant's Military ID.
* OR Active military personnel must attach a letter from their Commanding Officer on official stationery verifying a minimum of 180 days of Active Duty, and length of service, and must include the character of the service status in the Armed Forces of the United States. This letter must also include a copy of the applicant's Military ID.
Residency Requirement: All employees of the City of Chicago must be actual residents of the City as outlined in 2-152-050 of the City of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required.
