ENGINEER I:  $83,200 - $108,160  (Depending on Qualifications)
ENGINEER II:  $96,314 - $125,209 (Depending on Qualifications)


POSITION OPEN UNTIL FILLED

Under limited direction, the Professional Engineer provides professional level technical and specialized engineering work for the design, construction, protection, and maintenance of City infrastructure. Under limited direction, the Professional Engineer provides professional level technical and specialized engineering work for the design, construction, protection, and maintenance of City infrastructure.

This recruitment is for our Public Works Department. 
Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 
  • Serves as project engineer and performs project management and engineering tasks for various complex projects; performs technical civil engineering tasks in the field and office, reviews reports and construction plans for compliance with City codes and proper engineering design standards. 
  • Checks, evaluates, and reviews plans, specifications and reports submitted by private engineering consultants are compatible with other infrastructure projects and conform to the City’s overall goals and objectives. 
  • Provides various engineering advice in regard to proposals made, specifications and standards as to the soundness of design, theory, and construction practice. 
  • Performs and conducts inspections in the field, observes operations, and determines quality of work and compliance with City standards. 
  • Conducts, coordinates, and participates in various public informational meetings for proposed projects; interacts and engages with citizens to resolve problems, conflicts, and provide for public improvements.  
  • Assists and participates in the formulation of engineering standards and specifications and office policy; conducts engineering studies and evaluations, compiles information, and makes other recommendations.
  • Identifies needed improvements and assists with changes to policies and standard operating procedures to increase efficiencies.
  • Manages, monitors, and handles engineering consultant contracts; provides feedback and general information regarding contract status and details; sets agenda items, monitors project status, and conducts extensive meetings during project implementation. 
  • Frequent consultation with internal divisions, consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders as required in the analysis, design, review of studies/reports/plans/specifications, and inspection of construction work for compliance with engineering criteria.
  • Ability to serve as Engineer of Record for minor in-house projects.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, engineers, employees, and others, and deal with public relations problems effectively, courteously, and tactfully.
  • Assisting the general public with engineering related information requests.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:

  • A valid State driver’s license is required.
  • Current State of Florida Professional Engineer License or current Professional Engineer License from another State that can transfer within six (6) months of hire date is required. 
 
Education and Experience:

ENGINEER I:
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering degree; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.  

ENGINEER II: 
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering degree AND two (2) years of professional engineering experience as a Professional Engineer; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.  Knowledge of  
  • Modern civil engineering terminology and principles
  • Mathematics through trigonometry and its application to field surveying and engineering computations
  • Professional engineering tasks and practices
  • Construction, inspection, and maintenance of construction projects
  • Department policies and protocols
 
Skill in – 
  • Planning and designing difficult engineering projects
  • Inspecting work for compliance with plans and specifications
  • Negotiating with regulatory agency staff to obtain construction/operation permits
  • Preparing budgets and construction estimates
  • Manage multiple projects and ensure completion
  • Plans, designs, reviews, and manages difficult or challenging engineering projects
  • Establishing and maintaining good relationships
  • Dealing tactfully with the public
  • Operating a computer with general proficiency
