Under limited supervision of the Planning & Zoning Manager, this position is responsible for the management of planning & zoning division staff technical work.  The position is the primary oversight for planning & zoning permit application activities and will coordinate closely with the divisions and departments responsible to ensure successful completion of application reviews.
  1. Supervises staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; coordinating staff training; and supporting personnel procedures.
  2. Manages the City’s site plan review process including reviewing developments for compliance with Zoning Ordinance regulations.
  3. Leads customer service support for the division, and interfaces with the Assistant Building Official and Community Relations Department to support customer service across all types of plan review.
  4. Administrative support and staff support for the Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals.
  5. Supports Planning & Zoning Manager in preparation of amendments and recommends changes to the Planning Commission, City Council, and Mayor.
  6. Supports Planning & Zoning Manager in the development and execution of planning policy documents such as the Master Plan.
  7. Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance, including attendance at required meetings.

  • Conducting research;
  • Preparing reports and presentations;
  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and others sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction;
  • Working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Walking and standing are required only occasionally.EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Bachelor’s degree in Regional and Urban Planning, Urban Studies, City Planning, Urban Design or directly related field and 3 years of related experience;  or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid State of Michigan Driver’s License
  • American Institute of Community Planners Certification
