DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK
MINIMUM AGE: 16 years
Training period for non-certified applicants:
Applicants that do not possess a valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification will undergo a minimum of 40 hours of course work and physical training to obtain the required certifications at no cost to the applicant. While in the course, applicants must maintain a passing status at all times and are subject to review. Failing to maintain a passing status may result in expulsion from the class. Applicants will not be eligible for hire nor be permitted to perform any lifeguard duties that require certification until they are certified by a Safety Supervisor (Lifeguard Instructor) and their certification has been approved and forwarded to the City's Human Resources Department. Applicants that currently possess a valid lifeguard certification from the Red Cross or Ellis or YMCA will be considered first.
HOURS AND PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: Seasonal position - Starting in late May and ending in September. Employee may work 5-6 days per week (up to 40-50 hours per week). Must be able to work evenings, weekends,andholidays. Must be able to work flexible hours. Other than scheduled days off, requests are granted only if a qualified worker can substitute for the employee.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This is public safety work safeguarding swimmers at a municipal swimming pool. The employee is responsible for guarding an assigned section of a swimming pool or pool area, enforcing pool regulations, administering first aid and CPR as necessary, and filling out incident/accident and other types of reports. This position may be required to coach a synchronized or competitive swim team. This employee will also perform general cleaning duties of park and pool areas include the bathhouses and comfort stations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Safeguards and monitors an assigned section of a swimming pool or pool area.
* Performs lifeguarding duties as assigned including performing water rescue techniques and administering CPR and first aid.
* Performs swim instructor duties as assigned.
* Attends all training sessions, in-service training, and staff meetings.
* Keeps accurate records, makes reports, and completes accident reports.
* General maintenance and cleanliness of pool and park, surrounding area, and bathhouses.
* Depending on assigned location, may report to the Head Lifeguard, Manager, or Park Ranger.
* Displays mature approach to patrons and co-workers.
* Swims 500 yards at least once a week.
* Wears required uniform.
* Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING/LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
* Excellent customer service skills.
* Current Lifeguard Training and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certifications preferred.
EXAMINATION PROCEDURE:
* Applications will be reviewed and qualified applicants will be scheduled for water skills testing and an interview.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
* Must submit to a criminal history check, drug screen, and pre-employment physical.
* Must have reliable transportation to comply with regular and predictable attendance requirement.
