Position Details

 

The Liquor Store Evening Supervisor assists in planning and supervising the operation of the Municipal Off-Sale Liquor Store. Responsible for staffing, inventory control, layout and display of merchandise, proper handling of money, accurate record keeping, social media promotions and building maintenance. This position works primarily late afternoons and evenings.

 

Operations and Management

  • Assist the Liquor Store Manager in planning and directing the daily operations of the Municipal Liquor Store including developing work procedures and operational and safety plans.
  • Responsible for timely and effective communication of shift activities to the Manager and Assistant Manager.
  • Supervise the evening operations of the Municipal Liquor Store including, but not limited to: staffing, sales, merchandising, cleaning and general maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Assist customers in selection and purchase of merchandise.
  • Resolve customer complaints.
  • Perform or assist subordinates in performing duties; adjust errors and complaints.
  • Receive product and reconcile invoices.
  • Stock sales room shelves according to established plan.
  • Maintain perpetual inventory and conduct periodic inventory counts.
  • Ensure a pleasing, clean, safe, attractive shopping environment with effective in-store displays and appealing decorations.
  • Manage and operate social media promotions
  • Manage and operate security camera system.
  • Calculate and forecast product sales and prepare product orders.
  • Prepare daily sales reports and bank deposits.

 

Supervisory Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise the activities of clerks including interviewing, hiring, training, mentoring, scheduling, assignment of duties, performance evaluation and performance improvement plans, disciplinary actions, and grievances.
  • Maintain knowledge of and compliance with labor agreements and applicable employment laws, rules and regulations.
  • Provide a working environment that promotes safety, customer service and commitment to management objectives.
  • Oversee, maintain and document safety training for employees, provide appropriate safety equipment and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Ensure employees are provided with appropriate training regarding sales to minors and related sales restrictions.
  • Maintain complete and accurate employee records.

 

While these are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as part of their role with the City.

 

Position Requirements

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of retail pricing methods and techniques and inventory control methods.
  • General knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles and management procedures.
  • Ability to instruct and supervise subordinate employees in an effective manner.
  • Knowledge of the supervision and operation of a municipal liquor store.
  • Knowledge of liquor, beer and wine products to effectively assist customers.
  • Skill operating computers and relevant software and experience with use of technology in a retail establishment.
  • Ability to market and promote merchandise sales.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and interpersonal skills as applied to interactions with staff, managers and officials, vendors, and the general public.
  • Analytical ability to select, evaluate and interpret data, guidelines, policies and procedures.

 

Education and Experience

Associate Degree in business administration, sales, accounting, bookkeeping, business management or a related field and two years supervisory experience and 2 years of experience in retail business operation; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical and Mental Requirements

Positions in this job typically require frequent sitting and standing, walking, intermittent bending or stooping, kneeling or squatting, and keyboarding. This position is generally light-duty, requiring exertion of 25 pounds and may require the exertion up to 60 pounds of force on occasion and the ability to lift, carry, push, pull and move objects.

    • Hiring, promoting and/or transferring of employees: in the City’s and Public Utilities’ structure, the final approval is by the Council and Board of Commissioners.

    • Discipline and/or suspension: final approval is by the HR Manager and City Administrator.
    • Terminating employees: final approval is by the City Administrator and/or Council and Board of Commissioners.

  • Conducts or oversees training for current and new employees to ensure established procedures are clearly understood and followed.
  • Continually monitors results being achieved in assigned areas, providing the necessary tools and coaching to create a cohesive team.
