POSITION SUMMARY
This entry-level position provides assistance to library patrons at service desks, including reference and circulation. This position requires knowledge of the principles and practices of public libraries. This position will require the person to Saturday or Sunday (scheduled on a rotation basis) and one evening per week.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Assists patrons in identifying, locating, and using library and information resources and internet sites; provides in-depth reference services and locates requested materials and information sources to satisfy patrons requests; provides well informed reader’s advisory assistance in a variety of genres.
Assists patrons with circulation functions, including, but not limited to, creating and updating patron accounts, issuing cards, checking materials in and out, renewing materials, placing holds, collecting fines, shelving and courier processes, addressing account problems.
Assists patrons in the use of library computers and personal devices in order to access information sources and digital materials and effectively utilize common applications.
Works independently or as part of a team to plan and deliver programs, participate in outreach events, provide special services such as career assistance or technology instruction.
Assists with promotion and marketing of library materials, services, and programs, including display and merchandising of the collection.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
Serve as Librarian in Charge in the absence of supervisors and/or library manager.
May work with and provide direction to volunteers.
Performs other duties as assigned and required.
PREPARATION AND TRAINING
Education: Master’s of Library and Information Science, required
Work Experience: 1 year of customer service experience; 2 years of library and/or bookstore experience preferred.
Certifications and/or Licensures: None
Required Driver’s License: None
An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge
Basic knowledge of:
- Knowledge of contemporary principles, practices, and trends in library and information science
- Knowledge of bibliographic tools and sources
- Strong knowledge of application of computer technology and library operations
- Skill in reference interview techniques
- Skill in customer service including dealing with difficult patrons and volatile situations
- Common and emerging personal technology applications
- Skill in Windows, Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to operate standard office equipment including copiers and printers
- Ability to foster a supportive environment for a diverse population of users by utilizing patience and effective communication skill
Skills and Abilities
Computer Skills - Advanced computer skills required for accurate data entry and records management. Advanced skills required to instruct patrons in the use of common software programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, email, downloadables, and search engines.
Communication Skills - Excellent communication skills required to provide an exceptional customer experience for library guests. Also required to work in a team-oriented environment. Ability to deescalate situations with patrons in a positive manner.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed in a standard library environment, requiring standing and walking for extended periods of time. Must be able to push and pull a full book cart (up to 20 lbs/force) and perform occasional lifting (up to 30 lbs).
SALARY
$50,409 - $75,615/annual
