ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Acts as the custodian of evidence and property for the police department
2. Create reports in the current Reports Management System (RMS) to reflect specific
involvement or activity in a case.
3. Maintains a secure environment for all property and evidence received.
4. Handles all aspects of evidence and property management consistent with legal
requirements relating to chain of custody, preservation, storage, acquisition and
disposition.
5. Responds to requests involving the receipt and/or the release of property and
evidence to citizens, court officials, and other law enforcement agencies.
6. Testifies in court for criminal cases regarding chain of custody
7. Submits evidence to appropriate Washington State Patrol labs in a timely manner,
including adhering to Washington State requirements for Sexual Assault Kit (SAK)
process.
8. Complies with state and federal gun laws. Performs criminal history background
checks to determine eligibility for the return of firearms held at the police department.
9. Performs public disclosure requests for Body Worn Camera (BWC) recordings, in
accordance with the Revised Code of Washington (RCW).
10. Coordinates the civil seizure/forfeiture process, including notifications, scheduling,
attending, and providing all documentation for court hearings.
11. Provides assistance to the Support Services Section as directed.
JOB SUMMARY:
Evidence Technician is responsible for the collection, preservation and safekeeping of property
and evidence for compliance with legal and policy requirements. Performs disclosure requests
related to evidentiary recordings.
ADDITIONAL WORK PERFORMED:
1. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
2. Completes continuing education related to responsibilities and assignments.
3. May assist commissioned personnel with processing seized vehicles.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is primarily performed indoors in a Police Department and may require exposure to
dangerous substances of a bio-hazardous and carcinogenic nature.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
1. This position requires a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of three years of
experience in a customer service environment; police department or other criminal
justice agency, or a combination of each; evidence experience is preferred but not
mandatory.
2. Proficient with various computer software programs including MS Office suite; typical
office equipment; keyboarding skills.
3. Knowledge of business English including composition, spelling, grammar, punctuation,
and letter format.
4. Must become certified in Washington State Patrol ACCESS Level II within 6 months of
hire.
5. Ability to use good judgment and appropriate initiative, make reasoned and proper
decisions quickly and objectively in urgent situations.
6. The ability to maintain confidentiality and security of information.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. A valid Washington State driver’s license and a safe driving record.
2. Criminal convictions: Felony convictions are disqualifying. Misdemeanor arrests
and/or convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
3. Physical ability to perform essential functions of the job.
4. May be required to successfully complete polygraph examination, psychological
evaluation, and credit checks.
