POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The incumbent under the guidance of the Residential Collection Supervisor operates collection vehicle to remove waste from public locations in a safe manner.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times.
- Operate rear loader cart tipper. (EOI)
- Drive/operate rear loader. (EOII)
- Drive/operate side loader and rear loader. (EOIII)
- Provide unaided solid waste collections for residents. (EOIII)
- Pick up trash, recycling and compost from residents and small businesses.
- Learn routes in an efficient manner
- Drive/operate knuckle boom vehicle when needed for dial-a-truck service. (EOII-EOIII)
- Perform pre and post trip vehicle inspection and clean truck daily. (EOII-EOIII)
- Keep route, roadways and streets clean.
- Assist in other duties as assigned.
- Maintain knowledge of residential trash services
- Answer or refer questions from customers.
- Assigned specific routes.
- Provide notices to customers on proper procedures.
- Regular attendance and timeliness is required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EO in Training:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and must obtain required CDL within 9 months of hire.
- No experience necessary. On the job training for transitioning to higher EO levels.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EOI:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must have valid Class B CDL w/air brake endorsement.
- No experience necessary.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EOII:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must have valid Class B CDL w/air brake endorsement.
- 6 months previous experience in operating construction related vehicles or heavy equipment is necessary.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EOIII:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must have valid Class B CDL w/air brake endorsement.
- 12 months previous experience in operating construction related vehicles or heavy equipment is necessary.
OTHER SKILLS/ABILITIES:
The incumbent should possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment used in the department. Good communication and interpersonal skills are also required for frequent contacts with the public/customers on a daily basis.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must frequently stand, walk, climb, talk and hear, and lift items above shoulder level. Occasionally sit; use hands to handle objects, and reach with hands and arms. The incumbent must also stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, distance, and peripheral vision. Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also required.
The employee is constantly required to lift up to 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions and is required to work near moving mechanical parts. The incumbent is also exposed to fumes or airborne particles and at risk of electrical shock and vibration. Work is semi-repetitive but requires concentration when loading to prevent damage or loss to specialized equipment valued at over $100,000.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
