ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Galt Parks & Recreation Department is accepting applications forBASE PAY:
- Current Rate: $28.29 - $34.73
- Effective 7/2024: $29.57 - $36.29
- Longevity Pay - beginning at 15 years of service - 5%; 20 years of service 7.5%.
- Bilingual Pay - $50 per month.
- Certification/Education Incentive - 2.5% - 10%
- Medical-in-lieu - Employees who waive the City's medical coverage shall receive $200 per month for employee only, $350 per month for employee plus one, and $500 per month for family.
- Tuition Reimbursement - Up to $4,000 per fiscal year.
- Holiday Pay - 14 holidays; thirteen (13) paid holidays and one (1) floating holiday. Thirteen (13) fixed holidays observed: New Year’s Day, MLK Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Cesar Chavez Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
- Vacation Leave - 80 hours per year; after 4 years- 120 hours; after 10 years- 160 hours; after 15 years- 200 hours and after 22 years- 220 hours.

Under general direction, plans, organizes, monitors, supervises, and participates in park maintenance operations, including a variety of semi-skilled work in park maintenance and repair of parks, facilities, swimming pools, landscaping; assists in the coordination and oversight of contracted grounds maintenance work; provides administrative and budget support to the department, Parks Superintendent and Parks and Recreation Director; and performs other related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general direction from the Parks Superintendent. Exercises general supervision over assigned staff and contractors.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the full supervisory-level class in the park maintenance series. Responsibilities include ensuring the health and safety of the public and City employees by seeing to the timely repair and maintenance of all City owned parks, landscaping, grounds, pools, athletic fields, and recreation centers. Performance of the work requires the use of considerable independence, initiative, and discretion within established guidelines.
This class is distinguished from Parks Superintendent in that incumbents in this class perform hands-on work and assists subordinates in all areas of assignment as well as assists the Parks Superintendent and Parks and Recreation Director in the planning and layout of jobs and selection of materials and work procedures.
Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
- Plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of assigned staff in the maintenance and repair to facilities, swimming pools, landscaping, and park sites.
- Evaluates employee performance, counsels employees, and effectively recommends initial disciplinary action; assists in selection and promotion; and trains or coordinates training in park maintenance and repair and safety methods, procedures, and techniques.
- Determines and recommends equipment, materials, schedules, and staffing needs for assigned projects and programs; prepares detailed cost estimates with appropriate justifications, as required; reviews needs with appropriate management staff; allocates resources accordingly.
- Participates in the development of goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures; makes recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards, policies, and procedures; participates in the implementation of approved policies and procedures; monitors work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
- Assigns, supervises, reviews, and participates in the work of crews engaged in the care and maintenance of parks, landscaped, and recreation areas; determines equipment and materials needed and the work methods and procedures to be employed.
- Oversees minor park construction and renovation projects; coordinates work of crews for the best utilization of available staff and resources; examines work areas to review work in progress and resolves work problems; inspects work upon completion.
- Receives and resolves complaints from the public regarding park and pool maintenance matters and projects and/or maintenance staff activities.
- Enforces safety regulations and trains hourly, part-time, and seasonal employees in the practices and procedures related to the maintenance and cleaning of parks, pools, facilities, and other City right's-of-way, including the trimming, seeding, planting, weeding, watering, pruning, and cultivation of trees, shrubs, and other landscaped areas.
- Inspects landscaped areas and determines the need for fertilization, pesticides, aeration, trimming, and related maintenance work; inspects playground equipment and park furniture for safety and appearance.
- Assists with overseeing grounds maintenance and landscaping contracts and coordinates projects with the appropriate contractors and City staff.
- Supervises and assists with the cleaning and maintenance of buildings, restrooms, and other assigned facilities; maintains and repairs recreation equipment in parks, swimming pools, and related facilities; grooms athletic fields for use.
- Picks up and removes glass, trash, and other debris from parks and landscaped areas throughout the City.
- Monitors and maintains the municipal swimming pool system; verifies pool chemistry and adds chemicals or adjusts system as necessary to meet standards; ensures that filtration and lighting systems are working properly and that the pool remains clean and safe for public usage.
- Provides administrative support to the department, such as conducting research, performing special projects, developing reports, or compiling statistics.
- Maintains accurate records, reports, and logs of daily activities using appropriate computer software applications.
- Responds to and performs emergency repairs and other emergency services as necessary.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

Equivalent to graduation from high school and six (6) years of experience performing a variety of park construction, maintenance, and repair duties; including one (1) year of lead or supervisory experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license within 60 days of hire and have a satisfactory driving record.
- Possession of Infant and Adult First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification within probationary period.
- Possession of a Pool Operator Certification (CPO).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer, strength, stamina and mobility to perform heavy physical work use varied hand and power tools, drive a motor vehicle and operate specialized landscape equipment, and lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 90 pounds and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment; vision to read printed material and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The position may also work in the field, in which strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various City sites; vision to read printed material and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives, and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background investigation, including fingerprinting. Must be available for shift work, standby assignments, and work emergency overtime as required.
