CHARACTERISTICS OF POSITION: Under general supervision, operates medium to heavy equipment for the department; may perform duties as Cemetery Grounds Maintenance Worker; performs related work as required.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential: In the absence of the Sexton or as needed acts as lead person. Operates light to medium equipment (backhoe, mowers, etc.). Performs Cemetery Grounds Maintenance Worker duties when not operating vehicles and equipment. Performs preventive maintenance duties on equipment and vehicles. Cleans vehicles and equipment after use. Detects malfunctions in equipment and makes minor repairs or recommendations for major repairs.
Non-essential: None.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
Training and/or Experience: Diploma from elementary school (Eighth grade) and a minimum of two years work experience in the operation and maintenance of light to medium equipment. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of the operating characteristics and servicing requirements of light to medium vehicles and equipment. Thorough knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with the operation of equipment.
Skills: Skill in the operation of equipment.
Abilities: Ability to recognize operating deficiencies and make minor repairs to vehicle. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with employees and the general public. Ability to perform heavy labor for extended periods of time, often under adverse weather conditions. Possess mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
SPECIAL LICENSING REQUIREMENTS: Valid Kentucky driver’s license required.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Availability: Must be able to respond to calls in emergency situations at all hours.

Review of Work: Occasional spot-check of completed work.
Analytical Requirements: Analysis based on precedent.
Public/Internal Contact: Public 50%; internal 50%.
Mental Effort: Moderate.

Work Environment: Outside and some inside
Physical Demands:
Lifting: Lifts heavy objects of more than fifty pounds on a routine basis.
Stooping, bending, walking, etc.
Use of Equipment: Uses tools and equipment assigned to department.
Vehicle Operations: Operates light and medium equipment assigned to the Cemetery.
