This position is responsible for the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and the protection of life and property.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Conducts investigations into witnessed or alleged criminal activity; interviews and takes statements from witnesses, victims, and suspects; collects and processes physical evidence, including submitting evidence for laboratory testing.
- Responds to calls for service in all types of emergency situations, including medical emergencies, civil disputes, criminal complaints, aggressive or violent individuals, etc.
- Patrols assigned area and conducts proactive law enforcement; identifies signs of criminal activities and responds accordingly.
- Performs traffic enforcement duties; conducts traffic stops when violations are observed; issues citations.
- Documents incidents and prepares required reports.
- Assists in the preparation of court documents, including search and arrest warrants.
- Serves arrest warrants, search warrants, and criminal subpoenas; enforces court orders.
- Performs the duties of a Field Training Officer as assigned.
- Serves on special teams and task forces as assigned; serves as a School Resource Officer as assigned; serves as a Detective as assigned.
- Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Completes required training.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, criminal and traffic codes, search and seizure laws, town ordinances, and department policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of traffic accident investigation techniques and procedures.
- Knowledge of the geography and streets of the city.
- Knowledge of the court system and judicial procedures.
- Skill in the use of a computer.
- Skill in operating police vehicles, firearms, and emergency equipment.
- Skill in operating radios and communications equipment.
- Skill in operating radar equipment.
- Skill in restraining persons without causing physical harm.
- Skill in oral and written communication.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of specialized law enforcement equipment.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to a high school diploma or GED.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Wyoming for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a Peace Officer Certification issued by the Wyoming Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission.
