Position Purpose
Under general supervision, monitors city parks to assure compliance with city codes, including, but not limited to, animal control, parked vehicles, and rights-of-way.
Assists Police Officers with traffic crashes, traffic details, non-emergency calls, illegal parking, etc. as needed.
Essential Functions and Basic Duties
- Monitors trails, picnic areas, pavilions and similar park areas (via foot, bicycle, and motorized vehicle) parks to promote public safety and ensure proper use of parks and facilities.
- Investigates and resolves visitor complaints.
- Conducts investigations and may issue citations regarding City Ordinance violations.
- Conducts investigations into any relevant event occurring on Department property.
- Completes appropriate reports, such as, vehicle accidents, building burglaries, and employee / visitor injuries.
- Controls activity levels within assigned parks by unlocking and securing gates, patrolling parks, providing crowd & parking control at Sponsored events.
- Monitors and directs entering and exiting traffic into parking areas.
- May issue parking citations at any Parks and Recreation location.
- Attends meetings, training sessions and conferences
- Secures park facilities (locking buildings, gates, etc.)
- Addresses positive and negative issues in a professional manner on a one-on-one basis.
- Interacts with other agencies through communications and personal contact to gather the information necessary to complete a case.
- Attends training sessions, seminars, and college courses.
- Prepares and presents community educational presentations, videos, and photographs.
- Coordinates community events, including working with the state highway department. Assists officers with parades, escorts, concerts on the square and similar traffic assignments as needed.
- Directs traffic at school crossings in the mornings and afternoons.
- Performs related work as required.
Qualifications
Training and Experience
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an equivalent GED certificate.
Special Requirements
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Ability to successfully complete pre-employment background and drug screenings.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of rules and regulations of the Police Department and governing federal, state, policies and procedures, and local statues and ordinances.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of law enforcement agencies.
- Knowledge of standard office practices and equipment.
- Knowledge of the responsibilities of the Parking Enforcement Officer.
- Knowledge of the procedures in Traffic Crash Reports, Citations, and written reports.
- Skill in interpreting and applying legal restrictions with the public.
- Skill in oral and written communications for administrative and technical purposes.
- Skill in developing and maintaining effective interpersonal relations.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and prepare clear and comprehensive written reports.
