Are  you mechanically inclined and looking to join a great team?  Are you interested in working on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment?  The City of Green Bay has an exciting opportunity for you!  The Department of Public Works is seeking a Mechanic to perform work of moderate difficulty in the repair and maintenance of all Public Works and other City department equipment.  

The successful candidate will possess knowledge of standard practices, equipment, tools, hazards, and safety precautions of the trade as well as computer and technical skills including using diagnostic equipment and engine/transmission programs. The successful candidate will also be self-directed and possess strong project management skills.

The City supplies all necessary tools.

Work Schedule:  
Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. plus additional hours as needed to perform core Public Works duties.  Summer Hours!!: Tuesday - Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. 

No residency requirement.

  • Performs full range of mechanical maintenance and repair of all Public Works and other City department equipment as assigned, including, but not limited to overhaul work on autos, trucks, graders, tractors and other off-road equipment, replacing and recharging batteries, tuning engines and repairing starters, generators, tires, etc.
  • Operates all Public Works equipment and electronic test equipment such as PDA's, hand-held test equipment, portable computers, desktop computers, and self-test equipment.
  • Performs welding and fabricating duties.
  • Performs Preventive Maintenance (PM) Inspections and oil and lube inspections.  Performs equipment chassis lubrications, and drains and fills gear drive components at required maintenance intervals. Replaces filters on vehicles and equipment as specified in the PM Inspections. Inspects equipment and determines if equipment is safe to operate or is in need of repairs.
  • Repairs hydraulic, electrical and fuel injected systems and hydraulic cylinders.
  • Calibrates, downloads, and effectively operates computerized equipment.
  • Performs general shop and tool maintenance.
  • Works with the Parts Clerk to order parts and materials needed for repair work as needed. Conducts warranty repairs as needed.
  • Serves as backup to the Mechanic Foreperson. Trains employees as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Associate Degree in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Mechanics or related field.
  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification in all phases of medium-heavy truck repairs desirable.
  • One year experience in medium-heavy truck and off-road equipment.
  • Previous experience in commercial welding/fabrication and/or certification desirable.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record, and CDL endorsement or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.
  • Considerable knowledge of standard practices, equipment, tools, hazards and safety precautions of the trade.  Considerable knowledge of principles of gasoline and diesel engines, and welding techniques.  Considerable knowledge of hydraulic power systems, fuel injection and chassis electrical and engine management systems.
  • Knowledge of oiling, lubrication and fluid systems on heavy and light equipment and vehicles operated by the department.  Knowledge in Preventive Maintenance Inspections and the ability to recognize worn parts and necessary repairs.  Knowledge of welding on various metals and the preparation of metals for welding.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting hydraulic schematics, electrical wiring diagrams, service manuals and other reference materials; diagnosing defective equipment; performing complete engine, transmission and related vehicle component overhauls; including heavy duty automatic and manual transmissions.
  • Ability to install, repair and maintain specialized parts, including necessary component overhauls and field repairs.  Ability to operate equipment for maintenance and trouble-shooting activities.  Ability to operate all Public Works equipment and electronic test equipment.  Ability to proficiently utilize a computer and the required software.  Ability to follow oral and written instructions.  Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.  Ability to work the required hours of the position.
May be required to demonstrate minimum competency by successfully passing approved tests.
 
Physical Requirements
Ability to perform the following activities:
  • Lifting and carrying 20-50 pounds routinely
  • Lifting and carrying 50-100 pounds occasionally.
  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, bending, and stooping.
  • Occasional crawling.
  • Ability to focus on projects for long periods of time.
  • Ability to reach, climb ladders, apply leverage from unusual positions and work on creeper under vehicles.
  • Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.
