Must possess a high school diploma or GED. Minimum age of 18. Must possess a valid Class "C" driver's license from North Carolina.

This position is responsible for providing library services to the public.

This position manages the cataloging, processing and maintenance of library collections.

Major Duties

  • Provides service to both internal and external patrons.
  • Performs original and copy cataloging. Assigns call numbers, barcodes and RFID tags.
  • Adds and maintains MARC records for digital resources.
  • Coordinates processing of library materials, including labels, book covers, and unpacking and checking in of shipments.
  • Manages vendor processing for purchased materials. Checks vendor-processed materials for accuracy. Communicates errors to vendors.
  • Assists patrons at library service desks.
  • Creates and maintains statistical reports.
  • Plans and presents training on cataloging and technical services tasks for library staff.
  • Manages discarded and surplus materials.
  • Orders processing supplies and maintains technical services inventory.
  • Supervises repairs of damaged materials.
  • Receives mail and deliveries at the loading dock; signs for shipments.
  • Attends professional meetings, workshops, and conferences.
  • Maintains and develops knowledge and skills in cataloging and technical services.
  • Participates in committees, training, and other professional activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited university.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

  • Skill in operating a personal computer and utilizing a variety of software; experience with library management system software.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Supplemental Information

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Head of Adult Services assigns work in terms of general instructions. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports, and observation of library activities.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include ILS cataloging instructions, library classification and cataloging guidelines, and city and library policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related technical duties. The diversity of duties contributes to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to coordinate the cataloging and processing of library materials. Successful performance facilitates the availability and findability of materials for patrons.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with other library employees, other city employees, vendors, and the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in a library.
