Position Summary

The VP of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (VP, DEI) will report to the System SVP and Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer to lead strategic diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts designed to drive a cultural transformation that enables COH’s mission to be seen as a beacon of light for diversity, equity, and inclusion and the democratization of care.  This role is key to cultivating an inclusive and equitable environment where everyone is valued and empowered for success. 

The VP, DEI champions and guides implementation of COH’s holistic DEI strategy by translating the broader DEI strategy into best in class practices and programs that reflect our COH values; tailors those strategies for local implementation; oversees essential practices and programs that amplify COH work around all aspects of diversity and inclusion; manages and contributes to communications and employee engagement projects across the system; requires knowledge of change management process and principles and ability to work in a fast-paced environment; understands and contributes to setting priorities and meeting DEI goals at the entity and region level.

This leader provides overall strategic direction for the design and delivery of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion throughout City of Hope to support long-term goals and strategic growth initiatives. This leader will create best-in-class strategies and programs to ensure DEI solutions for all levels in the organization.

The Vice President is responsible for cultivating an enterprise DEI learning culture and leading City of Hope’s strategic and innovative DEI learning programs across the enterprise. 

They are responsible for the design of long- and short-term goals that align enterprise strategy and direction with enterprise DEI learning requirements in order to increase organizational effectiveness. The VP serves as a thought leader to the Chief Diversity Officer and other enterprise senior leaders in designing and delivering DEI strategies across the enterprise. This leader has strategic responsibilities for driving and implementing learning solutions (programs and tools) for the enterprise with measurable performance and accountability results.

This leader needs to be both highly strategic and a strong operator of excellence.  They will lead a team and provide direction and best practices for operationalizing standards and elevating HR to the next level.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Develop strategy and manage day-to-day system initiatives requiring knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion programs, people, systems management, change management processes and principles, and ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Partner with key leaders across the system to drive accountability and transparency around targeted improvements in diverse representation, particularly Senior Leadership at the entity and region levels
  • Consults with entity Presidents to track and trend DEI performance for the entire entity and ensure measurable outcomes are being achieved
  • Build productive and effective relationships with key stakeholders (internal and external) at all levels
  • Partner, coach and educate senior leaders across the system to develop organization-specific plans for advancing DEI goals relative to the challenges and opportunities within each organization
  • Collaborate with key partners across the system to tailor local implementations of DEI strategies, practices, and programs.  Key partnerships include -
  • Human Resources (Talent Acquisition, Employee Engagement, Demographic Analytics, etc.) …….
  • Talent Acquisition to attract talent through events, conferences, and partnerships with professional organizations, educational institutions, local community groups and non-profit organizations
  • Employee Labor Relations, Compliance, & Legal (ELR) – policy, grievances, legislation, guidelines, making changes/improvements to labor/workforce policies
  • Employee Engagement Survey review, drill down into demographic data in order to capture the voice of the employee to inform future programming and project planning
  • Marketing and Communications in driving the content to tell our story locally - internally and externally – working with these partners on our DEI brand and communication strategies and employee involvement
  • ERG Sponsors and Leads to navigate existing ERGs; partnering with ERGs, other NFPs, with industry leaders/best practices to establish and implement guidelines; building new programs in the regions
  • Community outreach and engagement – volunteerism; brand awareness; sponsorship; internal and external; local presence/impact…
  • Engage and network with the broader community to identify external DE&I partners, organizations, and events to foster engagement, build mutually beneficial partnerships, and create synergies.
  • Represent COH at events and public speaking engagements both internally and externally
  • Integrate staff into workflow scenarios; possesses the ability to delegate tasks while still remaining accountable for outcomes
  • Supervise junior staff by motivating, coaching, consistently providing feedback, holding them accountable and conducting their reviews
  • 50% travel to entity sites
  • Oversee resourcing and manage contractors on projects, as required
  • Serve as deputy to CDO and act as right hand in operationalizing and building the DEI practice at COH). 

 Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Must have at Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Human Resource Management, or related subject
  • Must have at least 10 years' of experience in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
  • Must have at least 7 years of experience at a senior manager level driving Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy, communications and change strategies for large complex organizations
  • Must have experience in a high profile, strategic role with heavy executive-level interface; preferred experience in complex matrix organizations
  • Must have proven, progressive experience and demonstrated effectiveness leading complex Diversity, Equity & Inclusion related initiatives and programs
  • Track record of fostering, driving, and implementing innovative ideas with broad impact
  • Significant experience driving results even in ambiguous situations, able to quickly take ownership of process or deliverables
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience in facilitation and presentation
  • The ability to synthesize complex situations into a digestible format for the business leaders and their teams
  • Strong oral and written business communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience leading and growing teams

Preferred Education and Skills:

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience working in a multi state/global organization preferred
  • Healthcare and Non profit experience preferred
  • Certification in Change Management

Additional Information:

  • Successful candidate can work hybrid/remote.
  • Up to 50% Travel between City of Hope locations within CA, AZ, IL and GA.
  • Estimated Pay Scale: $240,000 - $320,000
  • The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc.  This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
