NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled work in the operation of a variety of heavy equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of public works facilities within the Street Division of the Public Works Department.

Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the heaviest and largest types of construction and maintenance equipment used in the more difficult construction and maintenance operations. Work is performed and reviewed through inspection of work while in progress and upon completion by the Working Foreman.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Operates heavy construction and maintenance equipment; operates large backhoes, loaders and graders in making excavations, cutting road grades, moving dirt and preparing other materials for a variety of construction resurfacing and maintenance operations; cuts roads to grade and does finish grading.

Operates bulldozer and other heavy earth-moving equipment.

May operate power shovel or backhoe in digging of ditches, cutting down slopes and loading gravel, sand and other materials on trucks; performs snow removal and sanding and salting tasks as necessary.

May relieve operate on rollers and other construction and maintenance equipment.

Performs semi-skilled and skilled manual labor work related to equipment operation and construction and maintenance activities.

Performs minor vehicle equipment maintenance work.

Promotes courtesy and professionalism throughout the City of Huntington.

Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from high school or GED; minimum of one (1) year of experience in the operation of heavy-duty equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) from state in which employee resides.

24-hour availability.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of the general practices applied in the care and safe operation of a wide variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment.

Considerable knowledge of regulations pertaining to the operation of equipment upon the roadways.

Knowledge of accepted practices pertaining to road/alley grading, excavation and tree removal.

Skill in the operation of a wide variety of heavy equipment.

Skill in the operation of construction and maintenance equipment for finish grading and other phases of construction and maintenance equipment operation.

Ability to make adjustments to a wide variety of heavy equipment and to service and maintain assigned equipment.

Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and/or diagrams.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Motor vehicle, telephone, radio, bulldozer, backhoe, power shovel and other related equipment.

The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes and wet and/or humid conditions. Work is occasionally performed in emergency and stressful situations.

The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to dust, sewage and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is frequently exposed to loud noise and heavy traffic.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Pay: $17.68 - $19.41 per hour
