Job Description

Under general supervision by the City Attorney, the Paralegal assists staff attorneys who are responsible for litigation matters by conducting case preparation activities, including fact gathering, litigation discovery, document management, research and trial, mediation, and arbitration setting support. The Paralegal also assists in transactional matters including real estate closings, due diligence, document preparation, and research. The position requires familiarity or ability to develop knowledge of municipal government related matters.


Job Responsibilities

1. Schedule, coordinate and maintain calendar of activities, meetings and other events, including webinars, conference calls, and meetings.
2. Create, organize, maintain, and update litigation case files and transactional matter files.
3. Obtain, review, and analyze relevant supporting documents, including department files, incident reports, medical records, witness statements, real estate contracts, title reports, and letters, development agreements.
4. Prepare and update legal documents, including correspondence, monthly litigation reports, pleadings, discovery responses and requests, subpoenas, and documents responsive to discovery, subpoena requests, draft correspondence, draft agreements, draft transactional documents.
5. File and e-serve pleadings and discovery in Justice, County, District and Federal Courts. File economic development reports with various state agencies.
6. Perform due diligence including review of title commitments, surveys and underlying title documents and entity documents, coordinate and implement transactions and closings.
7. Prepare closing checklists, critical dates lists, closing documents, various affidavits, certificates and resolutions and coordinate and control the closing process for various real estate transactions.
8. Coordinate and schedule witness interviews, meetings, hearings, depositions, docket control conferences, mediations, and arbitrations.
9. Act as liaison with various internal departments, outside agencies, outside counsel, property owners, lenders, and realtors.
10. Prepare hearing, pretrial, trial notebooks as well as closing documents and closing binders.
11. Attend meetings, closings, depositions, and administrative and court hearings.
12. Perform additional duties assigned by Attorneys.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum Requirements:
  • 1.
  • This position requires a High School diploma or GED Equivalent and successful completion of a paralegal program through the State Bar of Texas, or an Associate degree in Paralegal Studies or higher-level degree from an accredited college or university.
    2. Position requires a minimum of three (3) years of related work experience in litigation practice with a professional legal service office.
    3. Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
    4. Must possess a current, valid Texas Class C driver's license.
    5. Must have excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to handle multiple projects.
    6. Position requires the ability to exhibit confidentiality and exercise discretion.
    7. Must have the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment with or without direct supervision.
    8. Must have a general understanding of court/legal procedures, and general knowledge of rules, regulations, and procedures applicable to municipalities.
    11. Must exercise a professional and courteous demeanor.
    12. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and must possess the ability to use general office equipment.



    Physical Requirements

    1. Employee generally works in an office environment. Work requires exerting up to 10 pounds on occasion when working with file boxes and records.
