What are the responsibilities and job description for the Librarian - Youth Services position at City of Midlothian?
Starting Hiring Range: $53,102.40 - $65,000.00
Under general direction, this position manages the youth services areas of the library. This is accomplished by managing, scheduling and monitoring activities and tasks, evaluating programs and services, providing input and monitoring budget expenditures, and assisting with all patron functions.- Provides exceptional and professional customer service to all library patrons in-person, via email, and over the phone.
- Plans, implements, and coordinates services and programs for children up to 18 years of age and their caregivers.
- Organizes and implements reading incentive programs for youth.
- Develops and implements outreach youth programs, such as story times, to other community organizations.
- Engages with and maintains relationships with community partners for youth programs and services.
- Curates, processes, and maintains youth collections from birth to age 18 including selection, cataloging, and reporting.
- Checks library materials in and out and makes minor repairs.
- Manages patron accounts, creates new library accounts, and places material holds.
- Serves library patrons of all ages by performing readers’ advisory, locating items, and providing general reference assistance.
- Assists patrons with library technology and services such as library computers, online catalog, self-check stations, and other digital resources.
- Assists in the marketing of youth services and programs including developing displays, flyers, posters, brochures, web content, and other materials.
- Ensure youth service area for patrons and users is clean, organized, functional, and inviting, and manage control of large groups.
- Develops and maintains reading lists that encourages reading and literacy across all youth age groups.
- Interprets and upholds the library's policies and procedures.
- Maintains statistical records and prepares reports for youth programs, services, and circulation.
- Assists the Library Director in long-range planning for youth services.
- Serves as a manager and/or supervisor as needed or assigned.
- All other duties as assigned.
Two (2) years of related experience is preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of modern public library practices and procedures including cataloging, filing systems, reference materials, publishers, authors, and publishing trends.
- Advanced knowledge of systems and best practices relating to public libraries.
- Knowledge of and ability to correctly interpret, explain, and apply city and departmental practices, procedures, laws, rules, operations, regulations, and policies.
- A comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization.
- Ability to allocate and utilize limited resources in a cost-effective manner.
- Ability to effectively supervise staff in a proactive, appropriate, and productive manner.
- Ability to regularly interact with others and exchange and receive of information, providing effective and tactful customer service, and work independently with a high level of discretion.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality which includes managing documents and issues appropriately.
- Advanced ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias, to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, and measurement and to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.

Special Requirements

Licenses & Certifications
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record as established by the City of Midlothian driving standards.
Work Environment
Works primarily in climate-controlled office environment. Physical demands are primarily sedentary in nature and require prolonged periods of sitting, walking, standing, and bending/stooping. Physical demands require occasional lifting and carrying up to 35 lbs., pushing/pulling objects up to 100 lbs., climbing stairs/ladders/step stools, overhead reaching, and working in confined spaces. Work may cause light fatigue of eyes and fingers because of routine use of motor senses, and occasional exposure to dust, odors, and mechanical and electrical hazards.Salary : $53,102 - $76,981
