GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
The purpose of this classification is to perform custodial or other maintenance duties that provide the City and the general public with safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient areas in which to work, conduct business, and/or enjoy leisure and recreation.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATEMENT: Every City employee has emergency response responsibilities, though not every position will require routine assignments during an emergency event. All employees may be subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description. Assignments in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature, with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically and operationally challenging conditions.

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Provides custodial duties to City facilities and parks; vacuums, sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and/or shampoos carpet and floor surfaces located in hallways, stairs, offices, restrooms, kitchens, public rooms, elevators, storage rooms, and other areas.
  • Cleans, dusts, and polishes furniture, equipment, artwork, fixtures, surfaces, walls, wood paneling, window sills, trim, doors, cabinets, vents, and other surfaces; cleans telephones and office equipment/supplies.
  • Cleans, deodorizes and disinfects bathrooms; cleans mirrors; replenishes soap products and paper products.
  • Cleans and disinfects water fountains, telephones, or other public facilities.
  • Washes/cleans windows and blinds.
  • Empties trash containers and recycling containers; replaces trash liners in containers; picks up and disposes of trash from floor/ground areas; separates recyclable materials from other trash; carries/transports trash to dumpster or other designated trash receptacle; cleans trash/recycling containers.
  • Maintains building security; turns off lights, copiers, calculators, heat switches, and other office equipment not in use; unlocks/locks doors; disarms/re-sets security alarm system.
  • Operates/utilizes various equipment, tools and supplies which may include a vacuum cleaner, carpet cleaner, buffing machine, mop, broom, cleaning supplies, alarm system, ladder, lawn mower, weedeater, leaf blower, snow blower, shovel, rake, drill, saw, or mechanic tools.
  • Utilizes precautionary safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Assists in monitoring inventory levels of equipment, tools, or supplies; initiates requests for new or replacement materials; stocks or distributes supply items.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, time sheets, vacation requests, or other documents; forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service or assistance.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

  • Data Utilization: Requires the ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data according to a prescribed schema or plan. Includes judging whether readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards, procedures or routines.
  • Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to start, stop, operate and monitor the functioning of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
  • Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  • Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or GED; supplemented by some related previous experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver license, class "E" and a driving record which meets or exceeds minimum City driving standards.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
    The City of Naples is a Tobacco-Free Workplace. Applicants for the City of Naples must not have been a user of tobacco products for at least six (6) months immediately preceding an application for employment; and, if hired, must maintain non-use of tobacco products for the duration of employment with the City of Naples. Tobacco is defined as any lighted or unlighted cigarette, cigar, pipe, nicotine dispensing device, other types of smoking product, smokeless tobacco including dip, chew or snuff.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, hazardous materials, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, or disease.
