The City of Ontario has an excellent part-time opportunity for an Environmental Programs Intern to assist in and complete a wide variety of administrative, technical, and research-oriented assignments. Interns have the ability to observe in and participate in a variety of tasks that support the overall operation of the Ontario Municipal Utilities Company Environmental Programs Division.
The ideal candidate shall have knowledge of basic engineering principles, as they relate to protection of the environment and the health and safety of the public. The intern will work with a team involved in preparing wastewater discharge permits issued to industrial users, performing monitoring and regulatory compliance activities, initiating enforcement activities to ensure industrial user compliance, education outreach, data management and analysis, and field work. Knowledge of principles of mathematics, biology, chemistry, and other scientific disciplines are important in order to perform the duties. The ideal candidate will have a basic understanding of the operation and maintenance of municipal utilities; the capability to use MS Office software programs; the ability to compile and organize data and create reports and spreadsheets; and perform other essential functions as required. In addition, the candidate will have the ability to work effectively and efficiently in a team environment. Additionally, the successful candidate will be a model for the City's Approach to Public Service - Commitment to the Community, Achieving Excellence Through Teamwork, and Doing the Right Thing the Right Way – and emulate the qualities of a 5 Tool Player – Leader, Thinker, Operator, Communicator, and Public Servant.
The Administrative Intern is a part-time/temporary position, scheduled to work no more than 29 hours per week, and is not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans.

The essential functions typically performed by the Environmental Programs Intern include the following:
- Performs customer service-related activities, assigns billing codes, prepares reports, manages data, reviews wastewater pretreatment and business permit applications and tracks them.
- Assists with compliance activities and performs other administrative program related work to assist with the operations of the Environmental Programs Division.
- Assists members of management, professional, and technical staff by performing basic administrative and technical assignments.
- Utilizes Geographical Information Systems for data analysis.
- Operates personal computers, printers, and other office equipment.
- Performs research and preliminary administrative analysis.
- Performs field work when requested of commercial and industrial users.
- Reviews and comments on publications and documents.
- Composes and edits correspondence, memorandums, reports, and other special assignments.
- Gathers and tabulates data.
- Responds to requests for information and general questions from the public.
- Prepares files for storage.
- Assists with specials projects and events.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Equivalent to completion of two years of college at an accredited college/university with major course work in Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
Licenses
Valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
Desirable
Currently enrolled as a junior/senior level undergraduate student, in good standing, at an accredited college/university with a major emphasis in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science or a related field. How to Apply
