Also, the Police Department will be offering the opportunity to participate in Mock Interviews after the written examination. This is not mandatory, but would be a great opportunity to practice your interviewing skills. They will be scheduled the week of September 2, 2024. More details to follow.
Minimum Qualifications
Age: Must be 21 years of age by date of the last written exam (08/24/2024); or 20 years of age for applicants who have successfully completed 2 years of law enforcement studies at an accredited college or university. By State Statute, you cannot have attained age 35 when the application is submitted. (Exceptions made for individuals with prior municipal police experience. Contact the Human Resources Department for additional information).
Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent minimum to apply; Applicants with an associate degree or credit hours towards a bachelor’s degree is a plus.
Military: A Veteran shall be allowed to exceed the maximum age provision by the number of years served on active military duty, but by no more than 10 years of active military duty. (45 years old) You would need to submit a Form DD214.
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen or qualified Alien.
Driver's License: Must possess a valid driver's license.
Vision: Applicants must meet minimum standards for vision and hearing. Applicants who wear glasses or contact lenses must meet minimum standards of visual acuity. Vision with corrective (glasses or contact lenses) lenses should not be less than 20/20 in the better eye, 20/40 in the worst eye, and 20/20 with both eyes open. Uncorrected (no glasses or contact lenses) vision is 20/40 and should not be 20/200 or worse with either eye.
Residency: Applicants need not be City residents to apply. When hired, employee shall establish and maintain their principal place of residence within a twenty (20) mile radius of the Peoria Police Department and shall not be subject to any forfeiture of the annual base salary.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position and pass the physical ability exam. Candidates who are hired must pass the physical fitness entrance requirement of the Police Training Institute (Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report) P.O.W.E.R. Test.
Supplemental Information
Applicants who meet all the minimum eligibility requirements and who pass the written examination and POWER test will have their names placed in the Police
Recruit Eligibility Pool, in alphabetical order and will be eligible for hire until the pool expires. Candidates who are being considered for hire will also be required
to participate in a combined interview with department and the Fire and Police Commission. After the oral interview score, the candidate may have added to
the composite score five (5) points if they have established residence in the City of Peoria. This is a rank ordered list of candidates to be hired as positions become
available. When this list is exhausted, interviews will be conducted again by the department and the Fire and Police Commission, and another hire eligibility list will be
made. When the applicants are given an offer of employment, they will then be required to pass the POWER Test, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, a
medical examination including a drug screen and an extensive background investigation. The offer of employment is conditional upon passing all of the required testing
and will be withdrawn if you fail a test.
Once you are in the pool, you must send in, if applicable, a copy of your college diploma and/or transcripts and any other certificates, letters, etc., you want to submit to show your qualifications. Also, send in a photocopy of your DD214 Form - If you are a veteran or are currently serving in the U.S. Military. If you are a current Officer, send in your Law Enforcement training certificate.
