What are the responsibilities and job description for the Social Work Supervisor position at City of Philadelphia?
This is supervisory social work within the assigned specialty. An employee in this class supervises the activities of, and gives consultation and direction to the social workers engaged in performing a variety of monitoring, counseling, referral, placement and/or adoptive functions related to services to children and youth, services to adults and the aging, or correctional rehabilitation. The employee has controlling responsibility for the operation of a unit within a specialized social work program and insures that the unit conforms to standards, regulations and laws of the department, commonwealth, and federal agencies. Work may include assigning cases, reviewing case activities, determining training and developmental needs, training employees, providing technical direction, reviewing worker performances, and initiating corrective action when necessary under the direction of a functional superior. Contact with individuals, their families, representatives of private and public welfare agencies, representatives of professional and community groups, and the general public as well as supervision of social workers and other subordinate staff are of major significance to the work and with correctional staff for the Correctional Specialty only. Work is performed under the general supervision of a functional superior.

The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Candidates must meet requirements within 30 days after the last date for filing applications.
1. CIVIL SERVICE STATUS – Presently employed by the City of Philadelphia with permanent Civil Service status and a Performance Rating of Satisfactory or higher;

2. EDUCATION:
GENERAL SPECIALTY
Completion of a master’s degree program in social work from an accredited college or university;
AND
3. EXPERIENCE:
Three years of social work experience, one of which has been at the full performance level within the area of specialization;
NOTE: Two years of postgraduate social work experience at any level within the area of specialization following the completion of a master’s degree in social work may be substituted for the required three years of experience in the General specialty.
NOTE: Child Protective Service Law requires FBI criminal history background check as well as the Pennsylvania State Police criminal history background check and Pennsylvania child abuse background check as a condition of initial employment and during tenure of employment if required by assignment.

CITY-WIDE PROMOTIONAL – Departmental and interdepartmental promotional eligible lists will be established as a result of this examination. An appointment in any department may be made from either one of the above-established promotional lists as deemed appropriate by the appointing authority.
Candidates who pass the exam and are placed on the civil service list will be retained on the list for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years after the establishment of the Eligible List.
