Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) is looking for a Community Engagement Assistant to join the dynamic team at the Portland Community Gardens Program!
The Position
The Portland Community Gardens Program is seeking a Community Engagement Assistant to support program registration and to help us communicate with our diverse population of gardeners. The person in this role will work closely with other program staff to complete data entry tasks and share important communication via email, text, and phone with clients. This person will also help complete special administrative projects as needed.
Bilingual speakers of the following languages are strongly encouraged to apply: Spanish, Mien, Russian, Hmong, Karen, Nepali, Vietnamese, Oromo, or Swahili.
This position will work 24-30 hours per week, depending on workload. During the Spring and Fall, the Portland Community Gardens Program is busier, versus the Winter and Summer. The ideal candidate will be able to commit to a regular schedule working from the office on weekdays, and also be available for occasional Saturdays and/or weeknight outreach events. Work will take place primarily at the Community Gardens office, located at 6437 SE Division St., Portland, OR, 97206. This role may be asked to occasionally work at other community locations.
Hourly Rate: $20.00-$28.00/Hour - Dependent on Experience
Duties:
Specific duties for this role include:
- Contacting community gardeners to provide and request information, answer general program inquiries, and invite to program events.
- Answering primary phone line, providing information to customers, and taking messages for other staff as needed
- Using telephonic interpretation services to communicate with people who speak languages other than English
- Data entry and management
- Performing basic accounting tasks, such as preparing bank deposits
- Using mail merge and other software applications, like Microsoft Office Suite
- Creating promotional and educational materials
This Community Service Aide (CSA II) position has a maximum of 1,400 hours in a calendar year. These positions are not eligible for benefits.

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
- Strong communication and customer service skills. This includes, but is not limited to, experience with making phone calls and speaking with people from diverse and varied backgrounds.
- Experience collecting, maintaining, and organizing data.
- Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook and Excel.
- Strong organizational skills
