The City of Puyallup Public Library is hiring for an Adult Services Librarian.

The successful application will perform a variety of professional library services in conjunction with selection, maintenance and circulation of library materials to meet the educational, recreational, and informational needs of the community. Incumbents work as part of a team to provide in-depth reference services to library customers in person, by telephone, or email, and promote library services to the community through education and outreach to schools and community organizations.

The City of Puyallup is a community of 43,000 and is situated at the foot of scenic Mount Rainier. The city is known as a regional commercial center, and serves its residents and neighbors with a strong, diversified economy.   • Plans, organizes, implements, coordinates, monitors, and assesses new and existing services and programs of the library, based on community needs.
  • Assists patrons in the use of library collections through reference interviews, database and web searches, reader's advisory, and provides instruction in the use of computer software to locate requested materials.
  • Uses library management tools to analyze,  research, plan and implement systems and routines to increase efficiency and lower programmatic costs.
  • Evaluates, weeds, and develops collection.
  • Submits monthly reports and aids, as needed, in the preparation of the annual budget and report.
  • Participates in the development of displays and marketing of the library's collection, services and programs, in order to increase use.
  • Maintains current knowledge of materials, resources, and services of the library and refers patrons as required.
  • Evaluates collections, allocates and controls materials budget as assigned.
  • Develops web page content and links
  • Establishes community liaisons with appropriate agencies and organizations in order to promote library services and facilitate programming and service delivery.
  • Maintains print and electronic collections, files, and indexes as assigned, including weeding, selection, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Provides a variety of programs for all ages
  • Participates in professional organizations and activities to keep informed of current and emerging trends in public libraries.

In addition to the above, the duties listed below are also considered essential for this position: 

Adult Services Librarian
  • Responsible for all adult programs and partnerships with the community.
  • Responsible for volunteer program, including recruitment, retention and recognition.
  • Responsible for reference and reader's advisory services, including databases.
  • Develops the local history room, including grant writing and digitization.

Knowledge of:
  • A wide variety of reference sources, popular culture, authors, literature, publishers and publications.
  • Knowledge and support of the principles of intellectual freedom.
  • Dewey decimal system of classification and Library of Congress subject headings.
  • Search strategies used for retrieving information from electronic databases.
Ability to:
  • Work a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • Clearly, succinctly, and effectively communicate ideas and thoughts both verbally and in writing.
  • Work effectively, with a teamwork orientation, in daily activities as well as addressing problems and unique situations.
  • Operate with a minimum of supervision and work collaboratively in a team environment to find solutions to problems.
  • Use independent judgment and make good decisions when resolving problems relating to employees and customers/public.
  • Recognize and set priorities, and to plan, coordinate and organize own work.
  • Set priorities and to use initiative and independent judgment in a wide variety of situations is required.
  • Learn the operation and use of an automated circulation system and bibliographic data base searching techniques using computer data base.
  • Monitor and assess needs of patrons.
  • Diagnose problems and develop solutions.
  • Use diplomacy and tact to establish and maintain relationships with customers, subordinates and peers.
  • Listen to, understand, and interpret the concerns of library users.
  • Establish and maintain good customer relations.
Education and Experience:
  • Master of Library Science Degree from an American Library Association accredited school of librarianship and Washington State certification as a librarian.
  • Training, experience, or study in the area(s) of library IT, young adult, children's, and/or reference librarianship.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of or the ability to obtain, and maintain throughout employment, a valid Washington State driver's license.

Constant use of sight, hearing, and speech abilities to perform essential functions and communicate with others. Constant fine finger manipulation and use of hands and arms in reaching/handling/fingering/grasping while operating office equipment and computers, preparing written documentation, handling library materials, paperwork, etc. Frequent sitting may be extended at times, while doing desk activities. Frequent bending/twisting at waist/knees/neck while reaching for library materials, working at desk, worktable, or moving from sitting to standing position. Frequent standing in combination with walking (short distances) throughout work shift in library areas; standing may be extended at times. Occasional lifting/carrying up to 30-pound file boxes, library materials, documents, etc. Occasional pushing/pulling force up to 10 pounds opening doors, drawers, and moving materials. Occasional climbing on step stools, ladders and stairs. Works primarily indoors in a library environment with low noise levels.

SELECTION PROCESS
Those applicants whose qualifications most closely correspond to the City's current needs will be contacted for interviews and/or testing. The appointing authority may conduct second interviews.
Notification – Following submission of application, an email acknowledgment receipt of application is given. Persons selected for an interview and/or testing will be notified by email, normally within 15 working days following the closing date on the job announcement.
Not Selected – No formal notification is usually sent by the City to applicants not selected for an interview or test. Should the same or another position open for which the applicant wishes to apply, he/she must apply online for each new opening. 

GENERAL INFORMATION

Hours of Work – This is a regular, full-time 40 hour per week position. All Library positions work a variety of schedules which will include evenings and weekends. The City supports a telework policy that allows employees to work remote up to two days per week.
Union Affiliation – This is an American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) bargaining unit position.
