The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is seeking an individual to join the Management team as one of the Assistant Park Managers for Durant Nature Preserve (237 acres) and Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve (146 acres) in North Raleigh, NC. These sites are part of the Natural Resource Section which is devoted to connecting people and nature through experiences, conservation, and education.

This position is responsible for coordinating, developing, and delivering environmental education programs, special events, and camps for a wide variety of audiences from preschoolers through adults, for the public as well as for schools and other organized groups. This role oversees facility rentals and assists with park operations, natural resource management initiatives, oversight of 8-10 part-time staff, and working collaboratively with the other preserves, parks, and programs across the Natural Resource Section. The position will be based out of Durant Nature Preserve while job duties will be performed at Durant and Horseshoe Farm.

The Natural Resources Section is comprised of two work groups, Nature Preserves and Programs and Outdoor Recreation. Durant and Horseshoe Farm are within Nature Preserves and Programs which also includes Annie Louise Wilkerson Nature Preserve, Walnut Creek Wetland Park, and the Section’s Nature Program team. Outdoor Recreation sites include Forest Ridge Park, Lake Johnson Park, and Lake Wheeler Park.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, schedule, market, and implement environmental education programming and interpretive exhibits and displays for groups of all ages and collaborate on the delivery of camps and special events.
  • Provide customer service to patrons, observe necessary precautions to ensure safety of all users, and render first aid in case of minor injury.
  • Support overall park operations and facility management including opening, closing, facility rentals, reports, revenue collections, contracts, deposits, payroll, and maintenance of facilities, grounds, equipment, and trails. Rental spaces managed include a large event venue, a picnic shelter, and campfire pits.
  • Assist with hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and supervising part-time staff, interns, volunteer, and Raleigh Summer Youth Employees.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including other divisions within the department and outside agencies. This position serves as a team member of the Natural Resources Section of the Resources Division to further the mission of the Department.
  • Assist with natural resource management initiatives outlined in the preserve management plans as well as clean-up and repair during inclement weather situations.
  • This position will be expected to work 1-2 weekend days a month as needed when programs occur that require full-time staff support.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in parks and recreation, forestry, urban forestry, environmental education, natural resources management, or field directly related to assignment and two years of directly related experience teaching nature-based programs and coordinating camps in an environmental education center such as a park, nature center, museum, zoo, aquarium or similar venue.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:


  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver' License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be certified by the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department in CPR/First Aid within the first two months of hire.

ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, chemicals, etc.); moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and travel.
