Job Description

This is a non-sworn technical position that encompasses the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of radio communication equipment across various departments.

The Radio Technician position is responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting radio communication equipment. This equipment can include two-way radios, broadcast transmitters, antennas, and other related devices used for communication purposes. Can work across various industries, including telecommunications, broadcasting, public safety, and military sectors. Their duties may involve configuring radio systems, diagnosing technical issues, replacing faulty components, conducting routine inspections, and ensuring compliance with regulations and safety standards. Additionally, they may collaborate with engineers and other technical personnel to design and implement radio communication networks.

A Radio Technician needs to possess knowledge of electronics, radio frequency principles, signal modulation, and transmission protocols, as well as strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work with specialized tools and equipment. Candidates for this role are expected to have a comprehensive understanding of radio communication systems used in public safety settings, familiarity with radio frequencies, modulation techniques, signaling protocols, and interoperability standards, knowledge of relevant regulations, standards, and compliance requirements governing public safety communication systems: Radio Fundamentals and Theory, and Electronic Fundamentals and Theory. They should also know the capabilities, uses, and functions of computer software (Microsoft/Motorola), as well as techniques of system and statistical analysis/troubleshooting, high-level hardware/software troubleshooting and computer imaging software.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, program, and maintain radio communication equipment, including mobile and portable radios, base stations, repeaters, and related infrastructure
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose problems with radio equipment and infrastructure and perform necessary repairs or replacements promptly
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on radio systems to identify and resolve issues before they escalate
  • Keep accurate records of work performed, equipment inventory, and maintenance schedules
  • Stay informed about advancements in radio technology and industry standards and make recommendations for system upgrades or enhancements
  • Provide project updates during planning meetings
  • Continue to expand technical knowledge through self-study and/or vendor provided training as management deems necessary
  • Familiarize yourself with vendor provided technical guides to facilitate problem resolution
  • This position has no direct reports; however, applicants may be assigned to project lead roles, assigning and monitoring work completion, and may have to perform new hire training in some capacity. Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Radio Shop Supervisor
  • Must respond to after-hours calls and/or serve in on-call rotation for Radio issues in department

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and three years of related technology experience

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License, or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire, and a satisfactory driving record
Preferred Qualifications:
  • FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License with Radar Endorsement or equivalent
  • Three years of related technology experience in the installation, troubleshooting (to the component level), and repair of, mobile, portable, and fixed end support for VHF/UHF and 800/900 MHz analog and digital systems, conventional and trunked radio systems, and the associated infrastructure as well as basic knowledge/understanding of two- way radio theory

ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: standing, walking, fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Light Work:
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work, and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light work.

Working Conditions:
Work is routinely performed in an indoor, office environment.
