Job Description



The City of Raleigh is seeking a devoted Assistant Director of the City of Raleigh Museum under the umbrella of the Historical Resources and Museum Program. The CoR Assistant Director plans, organizes and directs the operations and activities of the City of Raleigh Museum by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, directs, and supervises participants in a variety of classes, programs, and events that are social, historic, educational, and/or cultural
  • Serves as support of Museum Exhibit Program by organizing research, organizing support staff, and managing exhibit installation
  • Manages Subordinate personnel charged with stewardship for the museum’s collection
  • Assists in special events for the City of Raleigh Museum; encourages volunteer participation
  • Reviews community needs, recommends exhibits and programs, writes policies and determines expansion needs or deletion of programs offered
  • Promotes and maintains good public relations with the community being served
  • Assists in selecting, training, supervising, and coordinating the schedules of part-time staff, volunteers, youth employees, cashiers, and others
  • Maintains order and discipline in the City of Raleigh Museum; observes necessary precautions to ensure the safety of recreation participants and spectators; renders first aid in case of minor injury
  • Assists users of facilities; gives information and advice; enforces regulations and standards of conduct; confers with parents of juvenile users
  • Helps conduct public relations for the City of Raleigh Museum; advises citizens of programs and activities offered; prepares bulletins, pamphlets, brochures, website, and newsletters relating to center programs
  • Assists the City in cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Directly supervises part-time employees and volunteers at the City of Raleigh Museum
  • Interviews, hires, and trains employees
  • Planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation or directly related field, and 3 years of related experience

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.
