Handles all duties related to prisoner intake and security for the Police Department. No supervisory or budgetary responsibility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Answers phone and directs calls to the appropriate destination.
- Answers routine inquiries from citizens and other law enforcement agencies.
- Prepares and enters computer record of arrestee information.
- Completes a security check of each city prisoner at a minimum every 30 minutes.
- Provides for necessities such as food, mandatory phone calls, lights and medical care for city prisoner.
- Releases prisoners from custody when appropriate.
- Completes all necessary paperwork on bonds.
- Receives, secures and accounts for cash received for bonds.
- Receives, inventories and secures all prisoner personal property.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Occasionally assists officers in restraining unruly individuals at the booking desk.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Some knowledge of computers, calculators and basic mathematics.
- Must be able to follow oral and written instructions.
- Must be able to successfully complete a Police Department approved self-defense course once a year.
- Must be able to help physically control unruly prisoners as needed.
- Must be able to successfully complete a three-week training course.
- Ability to perform duties with minimum supervision.
- Previous experience helpful, but not necessary.
Material and Equipment Directly Used
Operates a variety of equipment including computers, calculators, and at times department approved self defense equipment, such as Pepper Spray and Taser. There may be times when use of personal vehicles may be required.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements
Work is performed in an indoor/controlled environment. Must be able to pass a physical agility test. Must be able to help physically restrain arrestees as needed. As a condition of employment, no tobacco products may be used while on duty except while on break. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor. Overtime hours may be required as needed.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Passing of a drug screening required prior to appointment.
