THE DIVISION
The City’s Engineering Division is highly active, managing all facets of municipal engineering services including capital project design and construction, private development project review, traffic safety, and public works inspections. The Division oversees a multitude of improvement projects ranging from street expansions, traffic signal installations, sewer and storm drain utilities, and City building projects such as the new Council Chambers, Public Safety Building, and all emergency service buildings.THE POSITION
The selected candidate will be responsible for managing and developing a wide variety of engineering projects, manage the capital improvement program by preparing long-range plans, budgeting and scheduling, advertising and awarding contracts, reviewing plans and specifications, and meeting with consultants and contractors during the design and construction phase of projects. They will review, recommend and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives related to engineering standards and the Division’s overall effectiveness. The position requires understanding of federal and state funding rules and regulations to secure, process and complete CIP. Additionally, the new City Engineer will assign, direct and evaluate the work of professional and technical engineering staff and participate in the hiring process. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate is an experienced engineer, confident in municipal engineering principles and capable of overseeing on-time project delivery and exhibiting leadership qualities as they direct staff in a wide variety of projects. The ideal candidate will be well versed in managing projects deriving from a multitude of local, state and federal funding programs.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:
Positions in this class are typically situated in a standard office environment. Positions also involve field work, resulting in exposure to the weather and exposure to disease-causing bacteria and other harmful pollutants.

- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a BS degree in the engineering or architectural field related to the assignment;
- Extensive experience in the engineering or architectural field related to the assignment, including supervisory experience of employees.
- Administrative experience in municipal government is preferred.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California driver's license by time of appointment;
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California within 6 months of hiring.
- Registration as a Licensed Traffic Engineer in the State of California is desirable.
